STATESMAN VS. W. 0. NEWS. 1 DARE NOT ACCEPT OUR CHALLENGE. OMINOUS SILENCE ON THE CIRCULATION QlJESTION. In our idsue .o f March 23 we stated that the STATESMAN had a circulation ju11t about double the circulation of the West Diw}i.am New3. We also credited the News with a circulation of 960, and stated that after deductions for outside circulation there were not more than GOO circu· , lating in West Durha.m and that about 300 \ of those were read by persons who r ead the ST.ATRSMAX, 110 that persons who advertised in the STJ.TEiMAN, too, received benefit from only 300 of the lvews circulation. We stated, too, that after making similar deductions from the STATESMAN circulation that we had a purely local circulation of 1,100 to 1,200, and claimed from this Bhowing that the STATESMAN was nearly three times as valuable a medium for merchants to advertise in as the News. We then offered to produce our books and mailing lists, and challenged the publishers of the 1v ews to submit their books and mailing lists to a. committee of three town merchants to report on the total circulation, the local circulation, the number of persons subscribing to both local papers, the number of subscribers to each in the several municipalities, and the number of paid-up subscribers to STATESMAN and News respectively. We also offered to pay $10 to each member of the committee for their trouble. These statements and the fair and liberal offer we made in connection with the challenge very naturally raised suspicion in the minds of local advertisers that our statements were all too true, and they waited with considerable curiosity for the succeeding issue of the News to see if our challenge wou~d be accepted. But we had little:auxiety on the matter. We knew they would not accept the cl1allengP., for they well knew that we had figured pretty near the ma.rk. Their boasted" best advertising medium in the district " has been whittled down to 300 exclusive of STJ..TES~N subscribers, and they dare not accept our challenge. We again repeat the challenge and defy them to accept it on the same terms and conditions as stated in our issue of Ma.rch 23. They cla'Te not do it. BUY THE "LANCASTER " ' FOR THE MONEY. THAT SLANDEROUS LETTER. The publishers of the New11 probably think they lrnve made a satisfactory apology to the Executive Committee of the B. C. church for the base slander they published on them in their own paper and used their best endeavors to get published in several other papers including the STATESMAN a few weeks a.go. We were informed that at a recent session of this Executive Committee a resolution was passed condemning the action of the publishers of the N e'ws and demanding a public apology. . If we have been misinformed we will gladly make · the correction . . There is one or two matters that we ask the publishers of the N ews to clear up. In their issue of Mar ch 16 they say, "We Jia.ve talked with several members of the Executive and neither of them look at it in that liglit ; " that is, as a slanderous article. After diligent inquiry we cannot ascertain that one single member of the Executive gave them any such assurance. They all, as far as we can learn, regard the article as a bMe slander and an impeachment of the honor and integrity of the E xecutive as a whol~, and they hold the publishers of the News responsible for the publicity given to it both in the News and the other pitpers in which. it was published. In the interest of truth and justice we challenge the publishers of the News t o publish the names of the "several membeFs of the Executive" who do not blame _ t hem for their action in this matter . Publish the names, please, and satisfy the public that you are not ·fibbing. They also state that tl1ey did not receive a cent for publishing the letter. If they can reconcile t)lis statement with what they told certain members of the Execu· tive about its being published "as a matter of business " it will be to their inter est to do so. '\Ve are pleased to hear from many sources that the abusive :irticle published in the News in reply t o our r emarks on this Executive Committee slander is con demned by ever:ybody. It is a good rule when argument cann'ot be rnet with argumont to keep silent, but it requires good common sense to prompt such silence. 1 ENFIELD correspondence next week. MR. D.
