At the meetlng of the Town CouncH·ou niionday night a· vote of some $80 w::i.s passed to lay a sidewalk from .Tohn :Fletcher's. house to Town's mill. Mr. ~ Porter, Ch11.irman of the Roads imd Streets, ibrought in a most respectful report, shtting that they neither had the lumber suitable uor time to lay said sidewalk this fall, and urged that the matter be left over. This did not suit Mr. Prower, the reeve, who seems to have a mania for lay~ng sidewalks and spending other peo-ple's money, and so far as he was able voted away an amount of money which mjiht just as well have been thrown in t'11e stove. The Roads aud Streets Committee have dune all in their powel' to meet the wishes of the people in making necessary repairs and building necessar)t' 11idewalks ; but no reasonable man can say that the sidewalk projected is a necessity. There does seem to be an extravagance ~reeping into our Town Council which the dectou will do well to check, as they will soon have an opportunity of doing. l\fr. Prewer boastingly said t.hat hG would vpte money for any projected sidewalk. We wonder in case he had a tenant in his house if he would give said tenant all the money he asked to spend necessitrily and unnecessarily 1 Would tlw.t be like W. P. Prower? But voting v away other people's money is another ~uestton vvith liirn. ' We very much mistake the opinion of 11e r'2:tepayern, too';'"irt11ey endorse the p10position of tho Public Property Com_ mittee to add twenty-one new street lamps to those already in use, but almost use~ l~ss . The first cost of these lamps will be not less than $225, and as Mayor McArthur remarked, the cost of lighting and keeping them in repair ,will be an enormous amuunt. Added to t e sixteen now in use the iiost of thirty-seYen lam ps at $15 a year each will be $555. 00. Are the _,.. peo_plt: uf Bowmanville ~illing to be saddle<l with an annual "burden of this a.mount? We think not. Many find a difficulty in paying their t:ix es now, and with- hard times staring us in t he face .a.gain, economy should be our watchword Tather than useless extravagance. If Messn. Prower :md B_ounsall expect to make votes by useless expenditure of tl1is l)ature they will surely miss ' their aim. No one is satisfied with the lamps 11ow in use. Few of them ar properly trimmed and lighted, and excepting a few or them plane d on corners where there are d eep ditches or obstruction11, they are of no pra(}tical use anyway. For iustance what use are the lamps in front of the scl,1001 bniklings, near Mr. J. McMurtry's, on Liberty street north, r:.nd the one n ear Mr. R. Hambly'a 1 Unless there is a lamp every four or five rods on all the princpal streets so as to light the town thoroughly, not more than t en a;e really required, What do our citicens ~hink 1 EmTo:a s~'A'rESMAN-D111AR srn.- By inserting t.he enclosed article you will W:m learn that the banquet to Sheriff confer a grnat favor on the tempimmce H>ple of this town i\nd l ocality.
