We have e. strong conviction that it; is as much the duty of the church and of christian people to try to get a religious paper put regularly into every home as to make provision for pJ,"eacbing the Word everywhere. ~~~~~~= en&e. Dubois, Dodge Co,, Ga. MRS. DONNELLY'S. MOST COMPLETE STOCK. in town. P. Trebilcock. ' BOWMANVILLE, DEC. 4, 1889. HOW TO MAKE FARMING PAY. We hold the opinion that fa rmers in West Durham should devote less acres to grain and more to pasturage. Stock raising in connection with dairying will cer· tainly pay better than grain. Many farms 11re dirty and need a rest and now is the opportumty. Patronize tlie cheeee factories, establish creameries, raise good stook, especially horses, and farming will pay>. We want the experience and opin. ions of our farmers on this Tital question. Following are the opinions of two pr11cti· cal men who write in the Whitby Chronicle on this subject : "I am frequently asked the question' regarding the cheese busine11s by parties who have had no ex· perience in cheese-making, is there money in it·i And this question has bee n espec· ia.lly called forth this fall after the dieap· pointment so many farmers have experienced with their returns from the ~r~in products of their fa.rm. As there are opportunities frequently preeent,ed of in· creasing their stock \lf cows at this season of the year, I would say a.11snredly it does pay, and was forcibly struck with the fact a .short time ago when r~qu ested to distribute some accounts to patrons of Oeneva. cheese factory. I noticed thlit Mr. A. Griffith had a little over $140 for the months of June and July placed t o his credit, which would make his cows average fully $6 each per month, a part of the season which is not expected to yi.,ld as good results as later months usually do. I know of no better way than turning attention to the keeping of cows, a system which very soon begins to ~ive protitabl;i returns when adopted. "-J AM'.Ef! BURNS, Colllmbus. "I thi1... ~ve1y 'armer in thiij '"icinity will acknowledge tnat the time h,.ll arrivtJd to consider seriously our eystem of farm· itlg, ot· the 11ystem generally f ·llowed that of grain gro\~ing. Is it going to be wise to continue or not? I thiok nineteen out -0f evety twenty will answer without hesitation, No! Well, with our fertUe farms well located, bkss~d with every advan· tage, are wa going to go on in the old rut, simply because we are so conaerva.tive :.iu our ideas, and sa.y : 'Oh well, we'll get throllgh some way; get enough to eat and ,something tC> wear." Answering for our intellig,,nt farmers, 1 BliY empha.twally, .No! Iu Lhe Western States (Iowa particularly) so long as they continued to grow grain, ~o me a Scotch phrase, 'they ncv" r got oot o' the bit.' They then went into cattle and dairying, a!ld large numbers of these farmers keep from 25 to 40 cows and sell to the creameries, which are established ·in every locality. InduM triou3 farmer·s are growing rich epontaneously. Cream~ties, in my opin10n, .-re very mucl1 more profitable than cheese factories. In the first place the milk never leaves the farm, and every farmer realizes th1e value of milk on the form in rir.ising young stock of all kind~ . .A.1i->th er reauun being that the crflam call b ,, C(1llected and conveyed to the creamery a t a much less expense than when the whole oi the milk is drawn to the factory. A third aud more impor· tant reason is a fact well known to every farmer who makes himself familiar with the markets, t hl!.t creamery butter com · mands from 4 to 5 cents more per pouud thaJJ. good fam1 d aity butter, and farmers who have had a few· good cows this season are well aware that tlt<'Y ha-ve been the most profita.blo bra1ich of the farm busi· ness. If ?.:utt.et m:.king pays on a smail scale, i t c"'qu:re11 l itt.lt> argument lo prove that it will pay bette-r when made in larger quantitie~, and on the most scien· tific principles. The expense of ~ilking and ca.ring for cows on the farm lB very much leM in proportion Ghan that of grain-raising, which has proved a most exvensive and uncertain inauatzy. I h "ve written the above with a view to opening up ,the subject. and hope t hat many others may tiok~ ti.., mu.;ttJr up a,;1 d fill your columne with facts and da.ta, which may have the effect of "w"kcning into act.ion our strugg:i.n~ n dgnbors, that gooil may be the re11ult. -B1toOKLIN. s; disease for seventeen years.
