The Salvation Arxny was given permission Wo conduct a Tag Day on Saturday, May l8th. The reduced estimate of the pub- lic school board was accepted at $18.500, a reduction of $500. Financial report listing sisndry accounts at $149234 was adopted. Council agreed W ,pay for pr-1 grams for Jubilce celebration. but declined Wo purchase badges for the school children for that occasion. No action was taken in connection wth repairing the McGill Building ut Washington. Matter was refer- red Wo the Finance Committee. Council supported the following resolutions presented by the Bow- manville Retail Merchants Associa- tion which will be sent on Wt the Provincial Government: 1. That the Provincial Govern- ment give prompt consideration Wo suggested amendinents Wo the On- tario statutes governing Hawkers and Peddlers recently presented Wo the Attorney-Geilerai by the Ontar- io Retail Merchants' Association. Moreover, we are convinced tliat more effective control of these peo- ple (hawkers and peddlers) 'is in the interests of not onlY the retail mer- chants but of the conmnunity as a whole. In every municipalitY those asu1 gte biain1opybs iness and property (store) taxes can only continue W do so through more efficient protection from non-local and unfair competition. 2. That the Provincial Grovern- ment enact enabling legisiation per- mitting the municipalities to assess chain and mail-order stores on a basis of total yearly sales as being more fair than the present systern wherein equa.l assessinent may be levied against stores having an en- ormous variation in their volume of business. 3. That the Féeral and Prov- incial Governments assume the f ull cost of ail municipal relief budgets, with the administration of relief to be maintained by the municipality as at present. The contention here being that unemploynxent relief is a National condition and problem and shouldi be financed by Federal taxation. [Only then can the burden be equally imnPose on ail classes o! our citi- zens. A bylaw was passed te rmise cer- tain sums for Town, Debenture, School and County purposes. and settîng the tax rate formaUly at 48 milîs. ARCHERS SCHOOL Report of of S. S.
