After reading ail of the argu- ments I can understand why al- cohol has become so popular. A man needs a drink after inhaling such tripe. And so the evening went onl. I saw attractive pictures of a P'rei.chi girl breast-feeding a baby which had been accidentally left behind by an American GI. I read r,1 the edvertisements on the newest Easter fashions and in many colors saw and read how anyone can get a man or a girl to fail flat on his or her face in adoration by putting the proper "goo" on hands, fa ce, teeth, hair or by tidying up your armpits with guaranteed "no-stinkum." It's marvellous what can be donc these days with "goo." I also went through the finan- cial papers and learned that prices are increasing in« many lines, strikes are bringing about wage increases in other lines. But the salaried workers and people in small industries are carrying on about as usual with their pros- pects not too bright. They might be called "the ones who are tak- ing the rap" because they haven't the organization to force their bosses to hand over more money yet the price of the goods they want to buy is going up. In the meantime, unemployment is in- creasing every day while the lar- gest buying market in hîstory goes along wanting to spend but being unable to obtain the mer- chandise. People ask if we are happy to be out of the army, but, despite the jokes on army incom- petence, it was neyer s0 confused as civilian life is today. One conclusion drawn from the evening's reading was that des- pite the pessimistie outlook in ai- most every uine of the papers read, people in Bowmanville are stili healthy, are eating three or four times a day, are planning new businesses, new homes and additions to their families indi- cating that they have confidence in the future and in the ability of Canadian people to overcome the problems confronting them. Frankly, I was happy that instead of being associated with a daily or city newspaper where distress seems to be featured, I was assist- ing in publishing a newspaper with friendly, optimistic news that could be read without the rfader becoming a nervous, downcast wreck. Therein, lies the strength of the hometown weekly news- paper.
