ZLECTED PRMMBNT 1 T.éam Defeat Hamptonl By 2-0 The windup of the sports pro- gram on Soldiers' Day, May 24, was a league football game, Hampton vs. Bowmanville, which drew a crowd of more than 300 to the High School grounds and held them although the game was almost an hour late in starting. It concluded-.just as darkness was f alling :with Bowmanville taking the game with an easy 2-0 win. Among the crowd were six old- timers, (Devitt, Slemon, Kers- lake, Vanstone, Baker and James) who played on the Bowmanville eleven during the horse and bug- gy age when their team was de- feated only once in three years' play throughout Ontario. They found the game Frîday night somnewhat draggy, due no doubt to lack of practice. There was little of the short, snappy passing to get in on goal and far too many toss-ins. Play was considered generally even throughout but Bowman- ville had the edge in shooting. Their two goals came on open shots, one direct from 50 feet out by Bathgate and the other an an- gle from left by Perfect and the Hampton goalie failed to touch either. Hampton lacked pressure and accuracy when close in sev- eral times. Teams: Bowmanville: Goal, Tice; backs, Potter and Lobb; halfbacks, Bath- gate, T. Graham, Wiseman; for- wards, Perfect, R. Graham, Bates, Knight, J. Graham. Hampton: Goal, Hindman; backs P. Cowling and Jim Reynolds; halfbacks, L. Trull, L. Broome, N. Broome; forwards, K. Petens, E. Allin, A. Randaîl, J. Cowling, B. Vivian. *In view of the fact that the la *gue games are played at various points in the district and at times when our sports reporter cannol be present it wo.uld help the game very much if league officiais could supply names of players on ail teams and the resuits of each sc that a box score could be kept up to date each week in The States- man. gramme wil commence at 2 p.m. and will include races, presenta- tion of prizes and afternoon tea served in the lounge, followed by a dance in the evening. At a recent meeting it was again resolved to hold the dinghy races to coincide with the Bow. m anville Beach Day sports where t he races terminate. Owing to the 24th having been chosen as Soldiers' Day in Bowmanville, many yachting enthusiasts here are given the choice of which I vent to take in on that day. The I .Y.C. has made extensive alter- ations at the club house to ac- commodate the great gathering expected. Particular mention -should be made of the Year Book. It is a very pretentiotis volume contain- ing many illustrations and histor- 'ical stories and other features by *competent journalists. The ad- tvertising features were to a great extent the work of Schofield V. Irwin who brought a copy along to the editor of The Statesman. At a later date we hope to carry some of the historical stories in our columns. Until educators learn to warm our hearts, our intellects will just grow colder by degrees.
