B PHONI Legion's liard I-itting Softball Team NEWS Juniors Defeat Whitby In Poor - Fixture Final Score S-1 .A pinch hit single by Campbell in the last of the sixth nning spoiled Art Clemence's bld for a no-hitter Friday night as the Bowmanville boys trounced Whit- by Rotary 8-1 in a Lakeshire Jun- ior League tilt. The big right- hander for Bowmanville was in complete command of the Whitby batters as he struck out ten and issued only one base on balls. In contrast, his mates combed the off erings of Reed and Quantrili who followet him, for ten hits. This marks the second time that Clemence has dominated the Ro- tary batsmen, as he turned them back with a two-hit shut-out in their previous meeting in the first game of the season. Lots of Errors Bowmanville went two runs up in the first inning on two hits and a pair of Whitby misplays. Mc- Ilveen's double scored Gilhooley who was safe on the first of Rae's four errors, and Hoar's single drove in the second run of the inning. For most purposes the game was over right then and there, as Clemence mowed down the Whitby batters as fast as they came up. Lowe was the first Whitby runner to get to first base, as Ferguson neglected ta touch the bag, but he was promptly er- ased in trying to steal second. In the fourth, Bowmanville went still further out front with a four-run splurge, on three hits and a pair of Whitby errors. With one out, Clemence was safe on a bad throw ta first by Rae. Then the Bowmanville batters got ta Reed's pitching and Ferguson, Gilhooley and Hoaper singled in succession, accounting for three runs, and the fourth camÉ in af- ter Mcllveen's long fly ta deep centre. Quantrili to Relief Quantrili took over the mound duties in the fifth, but he received the same treatment as Strike led off with a dlean single. However, Quantrili kept them off tbe*- score sheet until the sixth, when they made it 8-0. Gilhooley openeci the inning by working Quantrili for a base on bal]s, and he ad- vanced on Hooper's single. Mc- Ilveen was safe on a fielder's choice as Hooper was forced at second, Gilhooley scoring on the play. Then Hoar blasted out a double and Mcllveen scored from first making it 8-0. Whitby's lone hit came in the bottom haif of the sixth when Campbell drove a hit between thîrd and short, wîth onle out, and he became the first Whitby run- ner ta get to third base as he stole second and went to third on an error. However, Clemence bore down and MacDonald popped up ta the first. baseman. Galbraith fanned for the thîrd time. No Whitewash Finally in the seventh, Whitby pushed across a run ta prevent a whitewashing. Yull was safe on Haoper's misplay, and Gates walked for the second time. Yuill went ta third on an infield out and scored when Strike made a bad return throw ta Clemence, and the bail rolled out into cen- tre field. The win for the visiting Bow- manville nine puts them into first place with a three-win and one- loss record, while Whitby are a full game behînd with a two and two performance. The lineups: Bowmanville: Gilhooley 2b, Hooper ss, Mcllveen cf, Hoar If, Rurals Win 17-5 Against Fou ndry The Rural softball team contin- ued their winning streak on Mon- day nîght at the High School when they defeated the Foundry Moulders 17-5. After the first two innings there wasn't much doubt what the autcome of the game would be with Jack Gay hurling superb baîl. The Rural team had a really big inning in the, sixth when 16 men came ta bat ta score a total of nine runs. Werry, McDonald and Bragg were the anly men ta make the complete trip around the bases in one fast trip. Front Street showed good form on Tuesday night when they de- feated the Goodyear softball team 5-3 at the Public School grounds. The Merchants team were short quite a number of their regular players but Manager Jack Cale proved that his neserves were just as geod as the regulans. - Industrial :NSULATION th, WOOL .Lz and, guarantee our work. ce direct from the owner RUCE M 494 Bowmanvle, Ontario Above are pictured the mem- they are: Back row, Jim Wood- bers of the Bowmanville Legion ward, Dick Little, Ted Fice, Ron Softball Team who are fighting Richards, Herb Calmer; fron7t row, for top position in the Town Soft- Jack Allun, Ross McKnight, Ross baîl League.
