Trcasurcr's Office, this 6th day of August, 1946. J. D. HOGARTH, 32-13 Treasurer HOW TO HAVE GOOD PLANTS IN THE HOME House plants add to the com- fort and enjoyment of a home, particularly during the winter months. The tough old Aspidis- tras and Sanservias can stand a great deal of negiect in dry or draughty shaded corners but most plants respond quickiy either to good came or unsuitable environ- ment, states R. W. Oliver, Divis- ion of Horticulture, Centrai Ex- perimental Farm, Ottawa. Most fiowering plants, like Ger- aniums, 'Cineraria, and Primula like plenty of sunshine, but cool temperature. The hot, dry win- ter atmosphere of most Çanadian homes ruins most attempts at in- door gardening. This is the us- ual cause of fine Cyclamen plants, obtained from the fiomists at Christmas, being a wreck in a week or two. Begonias of the Lady Mac and Christmas Cheer type, African Violets and, Ache- menes are the most satisfactomy flowering plants for the average home where heat is plentiful and sunlight scarce. Ferns, and most foliage plants, as weli as African Violets, are the most suitable plants for bright north or east windows. Ivy, Wandering Jew, and Angeh's Tears grow in even less light but Coleus are more brightiy coiored in sunlight. Soul varies for different plants from the mixture of gritty sand and leaf mouid suitabie to cacti and succulents to the heavy dlay ioam preferred by the Geranium. In general, an open loam soul *with plenty of decaying mont fibre. is best as a basis. Sand or leaf mould can then be added to suit individual requirements. Water foçf house plants is best supplied fom the bottom, by standing the pot in shailow pans i to 1 % inches deep until the moisture reaches the surface of the soul. This will oniy need to be done once or twicc a week. Plants growing rapidiy in sun- shine at high temperature will need water more often than those under opposite circumstances. Hot, dry air is not only detri- mental to the growth of house plants but encourages the devel- opment of white fiy, mcd spiderI The same quality of worknianship and care .. The same courtesy and promptness . . hgiven to each and every radio repair job from out-of- and aphids, which are annoying pests. The best method of con- trolling such pests is to stand the pots, where possible, on a trayful of moist gravel and to syringe the foliage occasionally with a fine spray of cool water. Scientifically we have progress- ed far enough to split the atom. Now we must progress spiritually far enough to handie it. Having gogd Urnes roesn't br2I8 about good Iimes.
