This phosphor usuaily contains a Beryllium in amounts ranging from a fraction of a per cent to approximateiy four per cent. The lamps may also contain minute amounts of mercury. ln 1948 two reports were pub- lished in the United States de- scribing nodules which appeared in the skin and underlying tissues of four persons who had been eut by pieces of glass from broken fluorescent tubes. In most of these cases the original wound was slow in healing. About two months af- ter the injury, smali nodules were noticed in the injured areas. Though only four cases have so far been reported, the widespread use of fluorescent tubes contain- ing Beryllium phosphors presents a problem in the safe disposai of burned out lamps. To date, no cases of the skin condition have been reported in Canada. How- ever, it is urged that ail janitors, salvage employees, factory main- tenance men, firemen, garbage collectors, incinerator operators, refuse dumpmen, and other groups who may te associated with the disposai of burned out tubes, be warned as to the haz- ards presented. The chief hazard occuring dur- ing disposai is that of cuts from pieces of broken glass. Where large numbers of these tubes are Bell Telephone Building to Tenders have been callcd for the construction of an extension to The Bell Telephone Company's building at the corner of Church and Temperance Streets, it was announced today by F. In the home, used tubes should be wrapped, intact, in paper, or placed in a cardboard tube and put in a rubbish container with- out breaking. They shouid not be disposed of in the household incinerators, or placed within the reach of children. In disposing of used tubes in industry, the fol- lowing precautions shouid bo taken: 1. Where only a few tubes are bc- ing broken, if is recammended that they be disposcd of by the fallowing methods: (a) Place the tube in a burlap bag. Immerse in a trough or shai- low tank. (Being buoyanf they wili have to be weighted) bag and contents may then bo remov- cd intact and dumped. (b) In the open air, whore the phosphor dusf and any mercury vapour will ho quickly dispcrsed, the tubes may be broken individu- ally in their cardboard jackets with a length of pipe. The opera- tor should stand ta windward, and wear goggles and heavy can- vas or leather gloves. 2 (a) Where large numbers af tubes are being broken, the lamps may be broken out of doors, in a waste disposai area. The opera- for should be supplied with, and required ta wear, a respiratory approved by the U.S. Bureau af Mines for exposure ta toxic dusts. Full protective goggles and heavy gioves should ho warn. (b) Where if is necessary to break lamps with in buildings, it should be done in an isolated room and in a hood, ta minimize the escape af dusts. Sufficient exhaust ventilation should be sup- plied ta the hood ta provido an air intake at the breathing level af at least 150 liQ2ar feet per min- ute. A grated floor under the hxood is suggosted, so thaf broken glass will drop into a happer where if can be wet down and removed. Gogglos and heavy gloves shauld ho worn. 3.
