A parade of former Bowmanviile players set fans to reminiscing about previous season's, and ne- vived the old controversy con- ceriiing which player was better than, who, and why. The course of the 'gamne brought no solution to the problein, but left the im- pression that they were ail top- notch artists of the game. Artie Clemence, Biil Dadson, and Bill Edger, the three native Bowmanville pitchers who par- ticipated ail have one common characteristjc. Their style on the mound is close to perfect. It k oh- vious that each boy has made a study of pitching and bas devoted bours of practice to the de,elop- ment of a faultless delivery. Dadson started on the hill for Peterboro but was afraid to put forth much effort as he was sched- Uled to pitch fine innings on the foiiowing day. As a resuit of bis haif-speect pitching, Oshawa bat-. Iters enjoyed a bitting spree, rak- ing a borner and three doubles for three runs. In the second inn- 0 ing Dadson retired to the outtfieldi in favour of Edger, who pitched hitiess bail for his two-inning stunt and allowed oniy one bal] to b. bit out of the infield. At thb present lime Bill lacks a blazing fast bail and Iherefore relies on a great vanîely of "stuff" whicl compielely baffles opposing bat- lers. Lowery came in to pitch in the fourth inning and finished the game, gîving up one run off foui bits in four innings. Dadson and Edger starred at the plate for Marines, ciaiming three of *heir four bits. Dadsor came lhrougb with a double and single, while Edger doubied and drew the only intentional pass of the gaine. The other Peterborc bit, a double, ras off the bat of second baseman Çarvey. Apparentiy Dadson's care in avoiding any sIrain on bis arm paid off, since h. pitched bis teani to an easy victory over Batawa on Saturday. Artie Clemence pitcbed wel] for Oshawa, and with better sup- port be couid bave heid the Ma- rines in check. I the fourlh inn- ing southpaw Doug Sutton, who pitched for Bowmanville Royals in 1947, made bis appearance. AI- though be pitched hiticas bail for the remainder of the gaine, five errors in one innings allowed COMFORTABLY - AIR - FIAY - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 - E] r I. Cobourg and Bowmanville have been the leaguels most, evenly matched !'B" teams ail season, and with elimination the fate of the Ipser, both teains were mak- ing a desperite laat ditch stand. Going into the final frame Bow- manville was behind 3-2, but the gods smiied upon the locais, and they puiled the game out of the f ire, tying the score in the ninth and winning i the tenth inning. ILarry Crook, who is thrîving on play-off pitching carried. home the tying run and drove out the single which cashed the winning run when the throw-in was high at the plate., Dick Wilson was outstanding among several stars. His fielding was faultiess and his perfect throw to the plate in the seventh inning saved the game by cuttino dowi the runner fromn third base. He also had three hits. including a double which barely missed be- ing a home run. Crook, Hamil- ton and Gailagher bagged two hits apiece. West had a double and deserved another hit. Falls started the 4urling duties for Bowmanville but was forced to retire by a sore back. Button- shaw came in in time to get credit for the win. Courtice Now Leads In Sôfibail Finals Defeating Maple Gr. Courtice Imperials now lead in the hunt for th. Darlington Soft- bail Cup which they boid from the 1948 season. Tbey won a hard fougbt contest at Courtice on Aug. 23 by a score of 9-8. Maple Grove started off in good Style pushxng across 4 runs in the tirst inning. Courtice scored 3 unearned runs in their haîf of the tiraI and added 4 in the second and 2 in the third to iead 9-4. Mapie Grove put on a determined bid as Ken Sumersford hit a home run with two on and tb. score read 9-7. Jack Gay was weaken- ing on the mound but nice catches by Jimn MacGregor and Bob Johnson retired the side. In the 6th inning Maple Grove pushed another run acrosa and would have had two or three ex- cept for erratic base running. In th. 7th the Hawks again made a noble attempt as they hiad the tieing and winning runs on the base paths wben Bob Stevens grounded out to end the gaine. For Courtice Jin MacGregor was sensational in left field as he puiled down 4 or 5 long drives which aided tremendousîy for Courtice. Also Mclntyre caught a perfect gaine behind the plate and held Maple Grove runners giued to the bases. Altbough Mapie Grove outhit Courtice, the home teain played a much better game defensively. Bob Johnson and Ken Hutton played the out- tield weil while the .infield of Gearing, Hay, Penfound and Hoy piayed steady behind Jack Gay's pitcbing. The 4th gaine is scheduled for Maple Grove, Aug. 30 and if the 5th and deciding gaine is needed it wiii b. back at Courtice, Fni- day, Sept, 2.
