Twa becs were heldj PRIVATE SALE* 1' The Orono News Mu..IR. E. Lgam (Continued froni Page One) grounds af having limited time and concentrating on a few ser- vices in order ta do a better job. The purpose af the prosecutior and defence was to more deeply engrave the obligations af the Rotarian in the minds af those at- tendlng the conference. Sudbury Club Howard Rundle outlined the splendid work done in the Com- munity Service field by the Sud- bury Club. The Sudbury Club is one af the most active in Rotary. They have produced a film of their own describing the worli that le and should be done by service clubs with cripDpled chil* dren. It has been distributed by the National Film Board and the proceeds from the showing ofiti have gone towards the crippleci childnen's !und of the Sudbury Club.% A club should discover the needs the community and try ta find the ineans of satisfying them, said the Sudbury spokesmari. Potato Contest The Sudbury Club found thal the graund around the city was excellent for the growth of po- tatoes. Certain of the members formed a 500-bushel potato club and went to work to excite the local farmers ta emulate their re- cord. This was possible since one member grew 672 bushels on one acre, and incidentally walked off with the world's title for potato growing. This coripetition bas stirred in- tenant greatly in thai area, and the effort bas become so succeseful a potato fair has been made an an- nual event. 4dvice To Youth Another community service is the advlce and friendship given young folks who are struggling thnough the pitfalis of adolescence towards maturlty. Young folks are given instruction of fitting in- ta society, and basebaîl and hockey teams are organized to direct their energies in constructive channels. It Is the motto of the Sudbury Club that the crippled child must not be penalized for the parents' crippled minds. Regular clinics are conducted for these bandi- capped in conjunction with the Sick Childnen's Hospital staff from Toronto. Special Education Most s bools are geaned to edu- cate the normal child. Sudbury assist in the education af the crippled youtb, spending as much as $1000 for a single handicapped child in one year for this purpose. The Sudbury Club spent 11000 in four months on the Post-Polio re- habilitation centre in that city. This club exhibits the ideal in practice that service implies a sacrifice af time, effort and con- venience. Club Service Walt DeGeen delivered a quick talk on Club Service as sketched by the spokesman at the confer- once. There wene two sessions Friday mornnng, anc centering onound a skit given by the Toronto Club describing the Interviews ai a prospective member, and the other based on a talk by Basil Tip- pett ai the Toronto Club on tbe ideale ai club service. The akit doalt witb the reasons bebind classification, and showed that the senior member necd nat tbink he le leit out ai club activi- tics wben promated ta that pos- ition. Ideal of Rotary Basil Tippett expaunded that the first ideol ai the Rotarx Club is service. The Rotarian should attend all meetings and work en- thusiosticolly on aîl passible comn- mittees. The minimum ai 60% attendance for 60% af the meet- ings dae not make for club 'esprit de corps'. "We are ail servants", ho soid. "We knew that when we jained the club, since aur club is a service club and service is given by serv- ants The President ai the club le not the owner but the most active servant". Sharing Needed "We must take stock ai aur- selves ta sec wbat we have ta shane", he said. "For sbaring leads ta botter fcllowsbip. And fellowship is the basic fonce ai the club". Pnesident-elect Jack Eastaugh, who conducted the meeting be- cause ho had led the delegation ta Bigwin, remarkcd that Bigwin wos a very popular spot since it cancentnated all Rotanians and their wives on anc island, and pro- vented them from running al aven tawn as tbey have donc un the post un longer cities. The entine con- fenence was thenefone spent in concentration on the fellowship and pninciples ai Rotary. Formalities Lau Dippoîl moved a voted ai thanks ta the five mcix wbo gave the reports on Bigwin activities, nemarking that they were com- photo and excellent. Dr. Bill Tenant was respectfully remembered by the vanlous mem- bers ai the club thraugh a short eulogy by Walt DeGeer.
