The Charter was signed by Bel- gîum, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the Unit- ed Stateq. The preamble reaffirms the sig- natories' faith in the United Na- tions' Charter and their desire to live in peace with ahl people and ahl govemnments. Written inta the historic document was a deterni- inatian ta safeguard the free- dom, common heritage and civil- ization of their people faunded on the principles of democracy, indi. vidual liberty and the rule of the law.' The 12 signing nations resolved ta unite their efforts for collec- tive defence and for the preservp. tion of peace and security. The nations respansible for the birth of the Atlantic Charter agreed ta settle disputes by peace- fuI means if tbey became involv- ed, and ta refrain from the threat of use of force. Main points in the Charter con- cern themselves with the encour- agement of economic collabora- tion. It states that by continuous sclf-help and mutual aid the con- cemned nations will maintain and develop their individual and col- lective capacity ta resist armed attack.
