Played in the Memonial Arena, the tilt is believed the first ta go into overtime on local ice. Some 561 people witnessed the bard- earned win. Glancing down the Oshawa lineup was like reading a sim- flar list used by Mike's Imperials in 1950-51 hockey wars. Tod and Ron Lintner spearheaded the visi- tors' attack with burhv Bob Di- onne, the bounce 'em boy of last year's club, phaying up ta form on defence. What started out as a "friend- ly" game turned into a fair-to- rniddling rough con test at several points. Ron Lintner lost two teeth in the third frame ,w-lnenbis inouth came in contact with a Ifigh stick carried bv Barons' Jack Rice. Barons' High Scorers Don Masters and Timi Cox (up for the first timo boere) vied for sconing honors in the Satiirdav fracas. Bath rogistorvd tvo goals in the exhibition contest. The ~itr Siblock added another coantor ta put the Ohaa llub îwo nal up; Tod Lintnier added a third at 12:41 ta give ithe boYs fi-on-i the Motor City a three goal lead ta carry into the second period. But the locals came back strong in the opening minutes of the second frame. Lloyd Hamil- ton flew solo at the Oshawa net and drilled a bard one that was blocked by Chirka. The rebound was taken by Jim MeGregor who rapped the rubber home at 1:07. Inspired by first blood, the Barons kept up the steady pres- sure. Tim Cox found the left corner of the net at 2:07 ta reg- ister the second Bowmanville tally. and Maxie Yourth dropped the third counter ini the bucket at 6:49 ta even the game rit three- ahI. Wholesale Penalty Dept. .ust before the third Barons' tally, a push-and-shove affair de- veloped. Oshawa's P. McCloskey earned a 10-minute misconduect (hie started shoving the refere around) and Don Gilhooloy got a two-rninute sentence for rough- ing. Osbawa's Farrowv and J. McCloskey were pennied up for holding and roughing. With a margin in men, the Bar- ons appeared ta slow clown in their attack preferring to lob loti-,, ones from wvax out. Oshawa w-as content ta clear the puck ai-d the gaie became boriîng. Cooke put life back icito thec tilt at 9:16 when bie beat Gea. Oshawa returned the compliment at the 17:00 minute mark ta forge a goal ahead in the clasing minutes of the period. Sib- lock scored the goal. Don Gil- hooley evened it up at 5-5 nt 19:32 ta give the Barons an equal footing starting the third period. Oshawa Takes Lead Oshawa moved ahead at 9:08 when Tod Lintner scored his third goal of the evening on a pass fromn McCloskey. The early minutes of the stanza featured poor passing an the part of Bow- manville and it wasn't ufitil the visitors moved one goal ahead that the locals settled down ta better hockey., Don Masters took Bill Bagnell's pass at 14:14 ta deadlock the game at 6-6. Lintner and Rice got into it in a corner with the Oshawa winger losing two teeth aný,earn- ing a major for fighting. Rice was handed a two minute sin-bmn stint for high sticking. With 40 seconds left In the game, Bawmanville put on a power drive that saw the puck dent the twine. However, Ref- croc 'Dtutch" Hallman called "«na goal" claiming a Bowmanville player was standing in the crease when the puck was pocketed. The game ended in a 6-6 tie. Overtime Makes History For the first time in the his- tory of the rink, the intermedfiète gamie ent into overtime. It is understood Oshawa were quite unaware of the plan and werei partially out of their hockey equipment when their memories were jogged on the overtime period. Originally announced as a 10- minute overtime period. the extra frame was reduced ta a sudden- death contest with the team scor- ing the first goal judged the win- ner. Bath teams were tired after a grueling 60 minutes of hockey, but the Barons' Don Masters showed a terrific amount of speed when he streaked in on the Osh- awa goal and drilled one past Chirka at 3:33. Don Mercer and Dean West were given assists. Oshawa autscored Bowmanville 7-5 in the penalty department with a 10 minute sentence for mis- conduct and two five-minute stints in the sin-bin for fighting. Rice picked up a five-minute fight penalty for Bowmanville. Ladies' Bowling Get Of f to Poor Start First Night Something reahly showed tip the Major League girls their first night out.
