Service Mr. Arthur Collison, Mus. Bach., L.R.S.M. This Sunday afternoon, Dec. 19, Trinity United Church will hold for the first time a Community Carol Vesper Service, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Junior, Intermed- iate and Senior Choirs will take part, having a total of upwards of 100 voices, and the audience will participate in the singing of beautiful carols. There will be no evening service. The Senior Choir will render numbers from the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah when soloists will be Mrs. A. A. Merkley, Mrs. S. Black, Mrs. L. Ayre, Miss V. Sadier and Mr. W. Buckley. The service will conclude with the singing by the choir of the Hallelujah Chorus. Carols of many lands will be sung by, the Junior and Intermediate Choirs, and the Ladies' Quartette composed of Mesdames D. Van Driel, M. James, J. Richmond and E. Alldread, will also take part. This choral service, under the l:adership of Mr. Arthur Collison, organist and choir master, promises to be an outstanding experience and it is hoped that friends from town and country will join with Trinity for it. ,Mr. Collison, the very able choir leader and organist, is doing a very fine wdrk with the choirs under his direction. Hie was born in Manchester, England, and sang as a boy in the choir at Huddersfield Parish Church and later at Yorkminster. He came to Canada in 1923 and completed bis music studies here. For 16 years he was at Murray Street Baptist Church, Peterborough. After four and a haif years' service overseas with the R.C.A.F. and R.A.F. (404 Squadron) as navigator, he went to Pembroke, Ont., where he remained for seven years. Mr. Collison is a graduate of the Royal Schools of Music. Yes There Is He Is More Than Yes there is a Santa Claus. Thousands of children who are beginning to doubt that old St. Nick exists and twice that 3iany parents who don't know Iwhat to tell tbem can take heart from Dr. Edro Signori, a pro- fessor who is built like a foot- ball player and wears bis hair in a short brush cut. Dr. Signori, bead of the Un- Iversity of British Columbia psychoiogy department, doesn't think Santa Claus is nierely a myth. On this he disagrees with Canadian psychiatrist Dr. Brock Chisholm, wbose repeated at- tacks on Santa have set the joily aid distributor of Christ- nmas goodies and much of the rest of the wonld on their res- pective ears. He reiterated his stand in a recent interview at his home in Victoria by saying a child taught ta, believe in Santa and other myths is in for a rude awakening wben he realizes the stories bis parents told bim were lies. Dr. Signori, however, said in an interview Tuesday that be- lief in Santa Claus la the child's way of dealing witb an abstract concept. His own children, nine-year- old twins. believe in the actual existence of the joily fat man with the flowing white beard and ned suit. That belief, said Dr. Signori is a good thing. "I believe in what Santa Claus stands for and what that belief can do," said Dr. Signori. 'It symbolizes cbarity and reward for gaod behaviour and as such is positive and con- struct ive. "Santa Claus is flot just a step away frorn the bogey man wbich bas been used ta strike fear inta young children. He stands for a set of values wbich is quite different." Imm ECANADIAN STATESMMq.
