Barons Defeat Cobourg League Leading Corne..ts Altbough tbey have flot yet absolutely clinched a Lakeshore League playoff spot, the Bow- manville Barons served notice Saturday night that tbey should flot only make them but be serious contenders when they do, by soundly trouncing theleg- leading Cobourg Cornets 7-1 at the Memorial Arena. The Barons thoroughly out- played the high-flying Cornets, Who may be their first-round opponents in the playoffs, and ca-ne up with an outstanding effort both offensively and de- fensively. Goalie Denny Pal- lister had a well-deserved shut- out going until 5:25 of the third period when a deflected shot from the stick of Coon Med- hurst gave the Cornets their lrie tally. The Barons had previously scored early and often, led by Playing-Coach Ernie Dicken's hat trick, twc. goals by veteran Maxie Yourth, and single tallies by Frank Hooper and Ron Burgess. Yourth started the scorîng at 6:02 when he robbedi Munroe of the puck at centre ice, skated around the Coret defence and picked the cýorner of the net with a short, hardi shot. * Dickens Adds Another Ernie -Dickens made it 2-0 only 21 seconds later on a spark- ling play with Frank Hooper Who skated in. with the puck, drew the lrie defenceman and passed to Dickens, who scored from in close. At 8:48 Ken Wil- cox of the Cornets and Buck Cowle of the Barons were chas- ed for roughing, and Doug Fish- er of Cobourg was sentenced shortly after for high-sticking. With Cobourg two men short, Ron Burgess and Dickens work- ed the puck in close to the Co'- bourg cage and Dickens slammed it in at very close range. The first period ended 3-0 for Bowmanville and Hon Burgess added one more without a reply in the middle period. The goal came from a long shot from just outside the Cobourg blueline. Buck Cowle had got the puck on a face-off and passed over ta Burgess, who rifled the long drive. Play continued rough in the second period, as it bad been in the first, and a total of 13 1,enalties were handed out in the two periods. Bowrnanville drew five of these, including a raisconduct to Brabin, and Co- bourg had the other eight. Yourth Score Again Maxie Yourth notched bis second goal ta make the count 5-0 at 2:15 of the third. He de- flected in a shot by Lloyd Ham- Mlon from a sharp angle ta beat1 Clarke Sommerville in the Co-1 tbourg nets. George Brabin abso had an assist on the goal. At 5:25 Coon Medhurst got his. goal for Cobourg with George Jack- liUn and Jim, Munro having eassists. Dickens cornpleted his bat trick by scoring on a beautiful long shot from, the blueline at 11:14. The perfect drive went into the net inches inside the goalpost and waist-bigh, and Sommervulle had no chance on 1it at all. Frank Hooper ended the scoring for Bowmanville with anather picture goal at 12:16. On a breakaway be skat- ed in on Somerville, pulled bim out of the net then beat him. cleanly. Altough the Barons were short-handed twice before the end of the garne the Cornets could not manage anoth- er goal and the final score was 7-1 for eoCipsile 7-1 ~ Ic foCowahipse pik ou stars intis gae as pit oud balr nost unfairto the whole Bowmanville team played outstanding hockey... However, it was the three vet- erans of the tearn: Dickens, Yourth and Hooper, who played a big part in the win . . . Ron Burgess, Buck Cowle, and Pal- lister in the nets, were aiso standout performers. . . Bill Lyle filled in well with Hooper and Girardi for the absent Bill Berwick .. . An important factor in the one-sîded win was the sharp poke-checking of ail the Barons. Time after time they broke up Cobourg rushes in this way before they couid get much past their own blueline... The fans did not think much of some of referee Ken Black's penalty calîs against the Barons ..The Barons are stili in third place, one point ahead of Lindsay and five points up on Lakefield. Frank Hooper won $5.00 don- ated by Mel Sleep for scoring the iast Bowmanviile goal, and Denny Pallister picked up $4.00 from Mr. Sleep for allowing only one goal...
