Robert Taylor and the love- ly Engbish actress, Dana Wyn- ter, symbolizes the romantics ofa this war in the same expres- sion as Hemingway's "Farewell ta Arms" spoke about love and war ta an eariier generatian. The film dramatizes Lionel Sha- piro's best-selling novel ai the tender romance between a beautiful English girl, who waves her British lover off ta jWorld War II, and a dashing fAmerican officer who alreacly has a wife in the United States. When the Britisher returns, she is tamn between a lave and duty that is anly resolved on a flam- ing beach in Narmandy during the first hours oi the sixth af June, 1944.* English comnpatriot of Miss Wynter, Richard Todd, wha scored sa memorably in "A Man Called Peter," portra ys the shy but worshipful suihar who shines as a leader among men on the battlefield. The other starring assignment in the skiil- fui hands of Edmond O'Brien reveals with glaring honesty the behavior af a rank-happy American officer whose whims reflect with heavy cansequence tîpon Taylor and in turn, his romance with the lovely Dana. Beneath and interwaven into this drama of wartime love is the grim preparation for inva- sion that continues throughout the film until it crashes toaa harrendous climax in the D-Day smash at the Normandy caast.
