PAGE TWZLVX TEE CANADIAN STATESMAN. BOWILANVITLE.L ONTARIO SPORT NOTES By Doug Glynn Bowmanville-Orono Combines, who have set a sizzling wçin record in their own division thus far this season, will have an opportunity to see what they can do outside their own circle corne Tuesday night. Napanee Intermediates, who as we told you last week, are a well stocked organization, will play an exhibition game here Tuesday evening beginning at 8:30. Eastern Ontarion Challengers Maybe It*s been predicted that IF Combines defend their East- ern Ontario title this year, it will be probably against their Tues- day night guests. Well, this should not only put our whirlwinds to the crucial test, but will show the fans how they operate in faster, stronger company. Combines will visit Napanee on Tuesday, December 17, to complete the home and home exhibition series. Just in case this isn't enough extra curricular activity for the lads, they can look forward to their Rochester trips. Where To Put It? The first of which is on Sunday, December 22, when they iieet an Ahl-Star American amateur team to play for the Rochester Challenge Trophy. How they will bring it back 3hould they win may well prove a problem. We understand the cup is four (4) feet ta1l. In the weight department ...we'1l let you tender your own guess. And, last but not least, B.O.C.'s have that home and home series with the American Olympic team come January. We believé this gaine should draw a capacity crowd at Memorial Arena and most certainly promises to be a thriller. Combines again proved that they are a third period club on Saturday right as they bounced back to take the victory from Port Hope. They certainly proved they were flot any first period wizards. * . * * * Port Hopes College Captain Port Hope certainly looked like a 100 percent improved club on Saturday. And we would venture to say that much of the new look is due to their newly acquired captain, Ed. Rowe. Rowe potted two of their three goals in the game and assisted, on the other . . . our idea of a fine hockey player. Rowe told us that he is serving bis initial year in hockey circles along the Lakeshore. For the past four years he playedi for Clarkson College, which is located at Potsdam, New York. r And while there he earned bis degree in Mechanical Engineering. At present he works at G.E. in Peterborough. He also makes his home there. Three Stars and a Goalle In the three star selection at the game we had to drop the usual procedu~re, and as a result came up with four candi- dates. The three - Ed. Rowe (Port Hope) Junior West (B.O.C.'s) Fred "Buck" Cowle (B.O.C.'s) and goalie Ross Hawe, who we ieel turned i a stellar performance. Another Champlonthlp Club ? Watched coach Jed Wilson hustle, and we meun iustle, his Juvenile Legionnaires through a rugged session on Saturday afternoon. Jed is whipping the lads into shape for when their season operis in mid-December, and from what we saw he is doing an excellent job. Legionnaimes appear ta have a wei staffed club and unless something interferes to hinder their plans, they should be strong contenders in the group. That somnething which might hinder their plans is the fact they have a couple of good idgets in their ranks which they niight lose if an All-Star Midget club is organized. To date there are four clubs in the Juvenile Lakeshore group. They include: Bowmanville, Whitby, Cobourg and Lindsay. Port Hope are pondcring the Idea, but as yet no one has offered to sponsor the boys. Also, Booklin have asked to enter a team, which would undoubtcdly strengthen the leaguùc considerably. Defence Headaches R. emnedy ... Clear the Puek Coach Bob Williams, of the Robson Juniors had bis crew clown at the rmnk Sunday night for a. lesson in clearing the puck from their own end, something the lads have not been doing to date this season. It was their best practice of the year, to watch. However, just how much good it did thein will be seen In the near future. What we did sec and liked was a new line, that is new to local fans. Pontiacs used it in Aurora Friday last and from ail reports it shone. Among the trio are George Lawrence, Paul Wakeley and Lorne Payne. This group secins to be well suited to each other and should prove an asset to the club. Defence wise, the Pontiacs are only weak in the puck clearing department. If that can be rectified, then they should corne thmough with a few more wins. Certainly they have the gcomîng potential; that was proved in their game with Allîston last Wednesday. Only trouble was that they blew a 4-1 lead, and only because they could not clear that puck. Here's hoping the practice was of benefit to thein.j Ont arios Give B.O.C.p's Season 's Hardest Game Locals Win Baffle 6-3 Bowmanville - Orono Com- bines continued their sizzlinri win streak Saturday nigbt with a 6-3 decision over Port Hope Ontarios. The win left them undefeated league leaders and boosted their wins to eight for the season. It took Combines 20 minutes to get rolling, but once they did, they provided the 400 fans at Memorial Arena with one- of the best performances they bave given on home ice this Peso ort Hope Stronger Port Hope also Iced a more determined squad and one which appeared to be far su- perior than it was just two weeks earlier when they drop- ped a 15-2 verdict to B.O.C.'s. Their captain Ed Rowe was 'the big gun for them as he scored two of their goals and assisted on the other. rOntarios went into a 1-0 lead in the first frame on a goal by Neil Wasson, while Combines were romping around trying unsuccessfully to get their plays clicking. Ed Rowe set the play rUp wben he faked a shot and passed over to Wasson at the right corner. See-Saw Score Combines bounced back with added pep in the opening min- utes of the middle frame. Mic- key Walker blasted a bard slap shot from just inside the blue- line at 6.17, as B.O.C.'s tied the score. BrothersKeith and Juni- ior West wbo had engineered the play got assists on the goal. Wally Samanski put Com- bines ahead less than two min- utes later after be stick-handled his way past three Port Hopers and sank the rubber in the corner. Ed Rowe and Art Quar- termain got a breakaway at centre and went in completing a passing play to again tie the score. West Line Stars It was the old reliable West line that cinched the win for Combines as they tallied B.O. C's remaining four goals. Bro- thers Junior and Keith were up front with Chuck Armstrong for this one, in the absence of Dean and Raye. Captain Junior West called on some of that old know how in the passing department to complete four brilliant plays, netting bim two goals, while brother Keitb nabbed a pair. Chuck Armstrong also starred with four assists that entitled him one of the prizes being offered by local merchants. Ed Rowe scored the only On- tario goal of the final frame. He nabbed the puck at the cir- dle, after a faceoff, flipping it into the top left corner of the cage. Surprisingly enough, the pen- alties during the game totalled only five. B.O.C.'s had three and Port Hope two. Port Hope's C. Armstrong Leads in Points For Combines Bowmanville - Orono Com- bines Scoring Leaders (as of Sunday, Dec. 1). AROUND THE TOWN ....
