Colin Birtwistle advises me that he would like to get the tournament under way as soon as possible. For your convenience an entry bulletin has been posted at the courts. If you are unable to get up ta the club this week, a 'phone entry ta Colin will do the trick. Everyone wifl have a chance to win, as the tourney will be set up under 'a handicap system. Entrants are required for ail five events, and if you do not have a partner, just mark "'partner required" beside your naine. I don't imagine anyone would be interested in having this reporter for a partner? I didn't think so. Oh weli, there's always singles. t. t. t. t. t PAR THE EASY WAY Don Masters was telling me the other day that he parred the first hole in Cobourg last week. That in itself isn't news, but the manner in which he took the four strokes is. With Don at the time were Len Ryder and Bob McCleish, bath well-known as summer residents o! the West Beach. Don's bail was on the green, three feet froin the cup in four. When Ryder played a chip shot froin six feet off the green, it struck Masters' bail and rolled it into thé cup, giving Don apar four. Len has been golf- ing for 20 years and he says he's neyer seen that happen before. (Sport Editor's Note) Why can't I ever get a break like that? t t i. t t 841 SEE BY THE PAPERS" Both McDaniel brothers have now been sent ta the minnrs. Lindy with a 5-7 record is with Omaha, and younger brother, Von is on the Winston-Salem roster. A quote from the Globe & Mail's Jin Vipond - "«The big league rosters are loaded with naines like Ford, Bunning, Lary, Friend, Newcombe, Donavan and Burdette who once upon a time, in the International League and American Association, had a great deal of trouble getting Rocky Nelson out". Final Friday night -in Newcastle, the Bowmanviile Olympias took a 7-4 decision over New- castie-Orono Combines ta cap- ture the Lakeshore Midget Championship. The first en- counter o! the best of three series was won 4-3 by Bow- manville. Jin Moorcraft, first gaine winner, went thc route giving Up ten hits, but was tough. with runners on base, fanning nine. The N.O.C.'s left nine men on base, including bases loaded in the fourth with none out, as the locals retired the side without a. bail going out of the infield. - O!fensively, left-fielder Grant Wright with four R.B.I s pn a single and a double, was the big gun. The Olympias broke a 4-4 tie in the final inning after two were out. When ef- fective starter, Lycett, walked Soccer Ail-Stars Down Oshawa 4 -0 Shutout Friday night at Ennisklllen, a Darlington League Ail-Star aggregation scored a 4-0 shut- out win over Oshawa Italia, [league-leaders o! the Oshawa League. The Ail-Stars showed a lot of huste and desire in downing the strong Italia squad. Dick Denhertog's three- goal effort supplied most of the Stars scoring punch. *After twenty minutes of play, Denhertog converted a Wolroff pass for* the first goal of the game. Fiv'e minutes later, Den- hertog connected again on a pass from Mercer to end the first hall scoring. Oshawa. started the second hall strongly and pressed for the first 15 minutes. The Ail- Star defence led by goalie Al- Vin Stacey, turned ini a strorig1 effort to thwart the Italia club. Minutes later, Merçer gave the Stars a 3-0 lead on'à pass froin Reynolds. Bowmeister fed'Den- hertog a pase for his third goalj at the 25 minute mark. AUl-Star LIne-up - Goal, A. Stacey; FuIlbacks, A. Courtice, D. Flint; Halfbacks,-R: Prestorn,i G. Lowery, R. James, Osborne and Rancoclc waiked in succession ta force in the tie-breaker and Wright's two- bagger added -two insurance runs. Singles by Don Bagneli, John James and; Bill Osborne got Olympias off to a 2-0 first in- nirrg lead. Consecutive doubles in the bottom haif by B. Rowe and McCuilough gave the Com- bines a run, and they knotted the count on Cowan's second inning home run blast. Lycett and Dean singled to produce the lead run in the fourth,. but Wright's base- loaded hit scored two markers ta give the lead back to the Olympias in the fifth. Back came the N.O.C.'s to tie the gaine on singles by McCul- Iough and Cowan in their haif, setting the stage for the two- out game-winning rally in the sixth, when darkness called a hait. James was the only other Bowmanvilie player to dlaim two hits, as Lycett scattered seven safeties. McCuliough with a double and two singles, Cowan with a homer and a single, and Dean with a dou- ble and a single, led the Com- bine attack. GirI's Softbal Lose Out to Courtice Prepping for their Juvenile playoffs, the Bowmanville Girls' Sa! tball teain found the higher-class Courtice nine too tough, in an exhibition tilt at the Central Public School an Monday night. Courtice pitch- er Marg Snowden, was in coin- plete control throughout, giv- ing up only four hits, while ciaiming a dozen strikeout vic- tins. Led by Osborne's home run and single and a single and double by Lemon, the visitors garnered eight safeties off Vir- ginia Brown to wrap up the 10- 5 victory. Brown and Chasko- vitch each with a pair o! hits looked a!ter all of the Bow- manvile attack. The locals won their first round playoffs by default over Oshawa Radio Park. They wilil now meet the winners of Bar- rie and East York. The girls are drawing large crowds at their gaines at the Central School bail park. "Quakers" Court Team Breaks Winning. Streak 0Of Bowmanville Netters Peterborough -_Quakers .--"B" Tennis Club broke a four match Bownianville winning streak at the local courts, last Wed- nesday night. The Bowman- ville Club had taken a pair of wins over Lindsay in league competition, and a double ex- hibition victory over Whitby, before being stopped by the second place Peterborough crew. After their decisive 5-1 de- cision, Quaker "B" will have to be ranked as favourites over fourth place Bowmanville in the forthcoming league semi- finals. In other league-leading Peterborough Quaker "A" will clash witih third place Port Hope. The host club's top-seeded duo of Colin Birtwistle and Ar- nold Lobb rallied froin a first set loss, ta take the only point for Bowmanviile on the night's play. The point squared the D. Mercer, Juven îles Get Jump On Newmarket Rivais With 7 -4 Win Here By Jim Clarke A brilliant mound chore by Bob Osborne, dazzling fielding gemns, plus the moristrous swyat by Archie Crossey punctuafed Bowmanville Juveniles' 7-4 play-off effort last Saturday, Newniarket were 'our guys' opoitio in the initial O.B.A. playof! scrap. While the largest gathering o! horsehide enthus- iasts this year soaked up Old Sol, the left-ihanded magic of Bob Osborne was niystifying the visitors. Newmarket grabbed the lead in the opening frame when their catcher, Bone, launched a circuit clout to deep center with a mate aboard. Bennett, chucking for Newmarket, retired the side with no trouble in Bowman- ville's first. "Ozz" regained his composure and retired the next eight men, seven via the infield, whlle al- lowing a single in the fourth. The infield for Bowrnanville perfoi-med in sparkling fashion, with Pollard, Abbott and Bill Osborne ail coming up wlth some spectacular glove work. Bowmanville tied the gaine in the second, with "Moe" Rich- ards' bouncer ta the shortstop McKnight being fluffed for twa runs. Bill Osborne and Curt Vanstone bath had singles be- fore Richards' happer was mu!!- cd. Bowmanvile added two more runs in the third, with Bill Os- borne's towcring drive ta left sailing over the ficlder's head for a triple, plating Crossey. A couple o! dis- putcd plays (anc in which nuin- erous pairs o! peepers will no doubt swear, the runner was out), plus a single, resulted ini two runs scoring, tying the gaine at 4-4._1 With the bases loadcd and two out, Coach Bob Williams càhlled in Bull Bates ta oppose right hand hitting Keffer. Bates promptly whiffed Keffer, and Pobertson ta snuff the New- market fiame. Ted Dadson's two- bagger platcd Uic other twa tallies. Following John Mason's triple, Dan Girardi cxccuted a perfect squeeze bunt ta score a single run in the fourth. A walk and Jones' errar gave Part Hope their opportunity in the f ifth. Quaker "B's" Pat Mackaness and Tony Simpson defeated Anna Strike and Bob Martyn in straight sets to give the lead baek to the visitors. In the other mixed doubles event,' Marg Dustan and Budý Moses took the first set, but Joy Elmsley and Don Little came back ta capture the next two sets, assuring Peter.borough o! at least a tie on the match. The homesters would giad- ly have settled for a spiit o! the points, at that part o! the proceedings, but the Quaker- ites applied the pressure to take the ladies' doubles, and the final men's doubles event for a lop-sided inargin. Con Ion Fans 20 1-arvesters ln Playofi Opener The main factor in R-6wman- ville Harvesters' 9-1 loss to Port Hope could be summed up in one word "Conlon". Be- in the eighth frame to finish the game, Bill Bates is credîted with the win. Bowmanviile's seventh saw Archie Crossey swat a deep drive to centre that rolled to the fence. "Arch" plated "Moe" Richards ahead of hiniself with the game-winning blast. "Ozz" held Newmarket hitless over the final two frames, fanning two men in the ninth. Bowmanville notched their final run in the eighth. Bill Osborne blooped a Texas League single to open the frame. Ab- bott's attempted sacrifice was muffed, and Osborne scored with the final run of the after- noon. Around The Bases Bob Osborne looked sharp in iimiting Newmarket to three hîts. Bill Osborne had a great after- noon, going 3 for 4 with an R.B.I., plus performing sharply on first. Bill's spearing grab in the ninth o! a bullet shot was a real gem. Ron Poliard, aithough hitiess, was tremendous on short, with his glove work a treat to watch. "Arch" Crossey was the hero o! the scrap if one particular "hero" can be singled out. Arch was 2 for 4, with a double and that big home run for 2 RBI's. Red Abbott had a sorrowful afternoon at the dish, but the flame haired third sacker was red hot in thaà field. Curt Vanstone appeared to have regained his batting eye with a 2 for 4 afternoon. Umpire on the bases, "Snow- hall" Wilson, won't win any popularity poils after a couple o! calîs against the locals.
