.r - ~. ~ *~**4 ................................................................- -. a - - PAGE TWECLVU SPORTOPICS By Frank Mohun MA 3-7234 JUNIOR "C"' HOCKEY At a Junior "C" hockey meeting last week at the Flying Dutchman, the foundation of a compact league was made. Bow- manvile, Cobourg, Lindsay and Port Hope are definite entries, along with Oshawa Juveniles, who will play exhibition games- in the regular schedule. Brooklin a]so stated that they would corne into the group as soon as the cub is released from the league ini which they participated last year. It is expected that action will get underway about November 9th. Following the league meeting, plans were made concern- ing the Bowmanvile entry. The club executive is as follows: President-Eob Watt, Vice-President.--Norm Scott, Vice-Presi- dent-Bill Steven, Treasurer-Nels Osborne, Business Manager- Jim Crombie and Manager-Don Gilhooly. The executive have been in contact with a top-notch coach, but as yet no definite answer has been received. Perhaps the most important feature which was brought out during the league discussion, is the fact that ail teams will be comprised of homebrews, with a minimum of waivers, if needed. It appears to be a certainty that Saturday night will no longer be the main hockey night in Bowmanville. With games on TV, many fans would sooner stay home, this reporter included. However, as the schedule hasn't been drawn up as yet, it is flot known what nights the Juniors will play at the Memorial Arena. After considerable discussion, it was decided that the local entry would not be sponsored, but would carry on in the same manner as the B.O.C.'s. Additional equipment will be donated to the club by Bihl Steven, who sponsored Junior "C" hockey a couple of years ago. The next league meeting is scheduled for Oct. l4th. Watch this coluxnn for further news. i.t t it t BADMINTON OPENING Boy, did this reporter ever goof. The epening dance wasn't last week, but now well get it right. This Saturday night a dance wiII be held at the Badminton Club, to officially open the 1959-601 season. A round robin tournament will take place a week from to-night, November l5th. Anyone interested in playing badmin- ton will be welcome. t t t t t WORLD SERIES We are indebted to Don Masters for the following anecdote which took place during the World Series. Sitting near Don and his wife, at the first game in Chicagoj were a couple of men who had paid 65 bucks apiece to get In to the game. Quite a lot te pay te see a baseball game even if it was the World Series.j However, each mani placed a 50-dollar bet on the White Sox, and as everyone knows the Sox won 11-0. That's one way te beat the scalpers. It's to be hoped that the losers in the bet didn't have to pay scalpers' prices too. t t ~tf BOWLINGj -Most of the bowling leagues will swing Into action" next week, and we hope that every group will give us the fine co- operation in turning in reports, as ithe past couple o! years. In particular, we have been requested to tel the Men'? Major Lea gue that President Jack Gay will be on hand -Wednçes- day night to welcome this year's bowlers. The league has been F expanded to 16 teams, with 12 starting at an earlier time of 6:45. Please note the new time.
