-r--- ,SPORT@0C 87 Frank Mohum MU 3-723U JUNIOR HOCKEY The local Junior club made their first appearance of thi season a truly impressive one, as they held Peterborough Junio: "1B" Petes to a slim one goal victory. This reporter, along wit] several others we talked to, expected Bowmanville ta be out elassed by at least hall a dozen goals. Although it is early yet, the team played well. 0f cours there are several rough spots to be ironed out, but Coach "Mike' Osborne just intended te see what the players could do, beforq the regular season gets underway. Thus far, the team is made Up of Midget, Juvenile anc Junior players from Bowmanville and the surrounding district Newcastle has contributed three well known performers-Garj and Paul McCullough, and Eric Carleton. If we can keep this club going for a few years or bettei stil-for niany years, it could eventually bring about the returi of Intermediate hockey in not only Bowmanviile, but the entir( district, when once more the clubs wiil be strictly homebre'w We have had an excellent minor hockey set-up here for quit( some time. A few years back the Juvenile Legionnaires wor the Ontario title, but due to the nature of the league, importi were in style, and these players weren't given a chance. This spring, the Legionnaires were beaten in the Ontaric finals, while the Midgets won the championship. Let's hopE that these players will have the opportunity to represent theiù home town when the junior age limit has been. passed. If homebrew hockey doesn't return ta Port Hope, Cobourg, Bowmanville, Lindsay, etc., we might as well forget about any- thing above the juvenile division. t . ti. t*1*1 NO JUNIOR "C" LOOP VET At a full scale O.H.A. meeting last Friday night-yes, that'i right-they couldn't corne to a decision regarding the LakeshorE Junior "C" League. The past presidents feit that the clubs shoulc reach an amiable agreement. Tuesday night, a special committee composed of Tim O'Neill Stouffville; Pat Patterson, Brampton; and Lorne Cook, Kingston; was to have met in order to hand down an officiai decision. These "decisions" have been coming for three or four weeks now, but when the meeting takes place, the O.H.A. aiways "decides' to reach "no decision". The first Lakeshore gamne 15 supposed te be played this Friday night in Cobourg. "To be or flot te be, that is the question". i. it i.t tt TOWN LEAGUE HOCKEY Stephen Fuels have taken over the sponsorship of the Blockbusters, who are currently resting in first place in the Town Hockey League. Ken's Men's Wear has taken over the former Brooks Construction team, which means that a repeat of the softball finals could eventually take place, with Ken's meeting the Fuels on Ice, inx place of the diamond. The Front Street banner has been replaced by Hooner's Jewelepry, who also sponsor another club in the suminen, rnanîely the senior soccer team. GOT A PASSION FOR PASSING ? ý1 . . .... ...... ..... My wife and I were coming home last Sunday when we man- aged te get tangled up with some of the city traffic. As you niight expect when that happens, the cars were a littie bit dloser togeth- er than they should have been. In spite of the fact that traffic was moving along very well, close to Bill teven the legal limit, there had te be one Bul Stven"Impatient Pete". He scared me out of a year's growth when he squeezed in behind me.. and with the next traffic break, he was off with a roar. That got me thinking about this business of passing . . . and the people who seemn te have a passion for passing. They take some wild risks that really aren't worth while, when you stop to figure it out. You know, it takes a long time to pass a car that is doing fifty! To pass a car going 5OMPH, you have to get up to 60 . . . and even then it takes a good 10 seconds t. pas&. At 60, you cover 880 feet in 10 seconds. That's the length of a football field, one-sixth of a mile or more than a long city block. That's a long, long way. When you're passing another car, you should remember that . .. and if you're meeting traffic at the seme time, you'll need twice the distance or tise length of TWO football fields. Wben you are driv- ing, remember yeur safety rules . .. better &afe than sorry. Another good safety rule to remember is te bring your car in for regular servicing and safety checks . .. and when you are ready to trade for a new car or a good used car, it's Robson Motors for Q uardian miles and miles of econom- Maintenance ical. trouble-f ree driving-7 pleasure.
