?AGE NYGET ?ITt t~ANAnTA?.7 ~TA'?'W~.RAM 1~IAM~11Y1 P ___________________________ ~ ~/A~ AZLA1A~J -'WEDN~SDAY, OCT. 4th, 1 ____ I cs'f ROGER HITS 61 One thing for sure - It wont be difficuit to remember when Roger Maris hit his 6lst home mun, because it was in '61. Bet there aren't too many people who can recall the year when "Babe" Ruth bit 60. We were kind of rooting for Maris to beat the 154 game record, but sentimentally now we're glad he didn't. However, as these records are based on an entire apason, why wouldn't - say 55 homers constitute a mark for the new, longer sehedule. You can't compare records set In different achedules, except that Ruth bas the better average - a home mun for every 2.5666 games, while Maris cracked a four-bagger every 2.6557 games. t1 t t t t YANKEES EASILY AU year long the Cincinnati Reds have been written off as pennant contenders, but they did win. So here we go flot giving them a chance in the World Series. This reporter calls the Yankees to win easiiy in four or five games, but we said the same thing last year and Pittsburgh - well you know what happened. i. * f t MIDGETS PLAY THIS WEEKEND Bowmanville Midgets will wrap-up their basebali season this weekend, win or ]ose, but victory means the Ontario title. Merritton will be here for a 2 o'clock game Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Park. The second tilt goes in Merritton Sunday and if a third is needed it wili be played on Monday, the site to be decided by a flip of the coin. After a pair of close games, Merritton trounced the defending champion Walkerton il-i in the third and decid- lng contest, Sunday, to reach the finals. t 1 t t t MOSPORT ON SATURDAY Once again Mosport Park wvas invaded by a tremendous crowd to watch the Canadian Grand Prix, Saturday. And again the facilities proved capable of looking after this Influx of people, some who arrived Friday ta set up camp, the majority who wvent Saturday and several who didn't head for home until the day after the race. This reporter encountered no difficulties cither oni the way out or returning home. With the O.P.P. doing the directing, traffic proceeded smoothly. Parking was no problem, and although some of the best vantage points were crowded (ta be expected) there was plenty of spectator space. We stili maintain the best spot is on the 11, turn. A couple of suggestions we might offer are these: We stationed ourselves betwcen two P.A. loud-speakers only to find they weren't working. It would have been much more interesting had we been able to receive a description. It wouid be a good idea if they had programs available Inside the entrance gates. At least we didn't find any at the press gate. It was ironical that only minutes before the end of the race, we had remarked that the score-keeper (if that's the word) really had ta be on his toes ta know the positions o! the cars. No doubt even those who weren't there know thal Pedro Rodriguez of Mexico was named the winner, Immed- lately at the end o! the race. By the time this scribe reach- ed the pit ares. Canada's Peter Ryan was being presented wlth the winner's tropby. Ryan actually finished first by two seconds, but a one- minute penalty for leaving the track with ail four wbheels and flot coming ta a complete stop before re-entering) gave the win ta, Rodriguez. At least that was the first verdict. Nothing like going right ta the top for the answer - we were told by Stirling Mass that Rodriguez had only driven 99 laps o! the required 100. And where was Mr. Mass? After duelng with Belgium's Olivier Gendeblen for the lead far three-quarters o! the race, Mass was forced ta make several pit stops due ta engine difficulties, but really poured it on ta end up third. Gendebien had the race i his hip pocket, after Moss tan into trouble, but was forced out o! action in the 83rd lap L due ta a balky gear box. The leaders bit an 80 xn.p.h. average quite often, but Stirling Mass set a new lap record o! one minute 34 and two- tenths seconds - and that's travelling. tt ft t f JUVENILES MADE IT CLOSE Bowmanville Western Tire saw their hopes of repeat- ing as Ontario Juvenile Champions go out the window wvhen Clinton staged a three-run eighth inning rally to capture the third and deciding game 4-3. Details appear elsewhere on the sports pages. The Juveniles made it close. They didn't win - but any team that wins the titie one year and comes within an out of taking it again, deserves a lot of credit. Hat's off to the team, manager Frank Wright, coaches Fred Cowle and Dan Girardi. MEMORIAL ARENA BOWMAN VILLE f ,PUBLIC SKATING 8-10 P.M.
