The Canadian Stateornan, Bewinanvllle, May 1, 19831 SSPORTropucs, 4'~! By Frank Mohun 623-723 : EPORTING FROM MOWHAWK RACEWAY Sa you lost an haur's sleep over the week-end. Wish 'we could say the same. However, as we had absalutely noth- ie ing ta write about in aur column and as usual sparing no 1expense ta caver the sporting world, this reporter faund ,himself at the new harness racing establishment - Mohawk cRaceway, Saturday night. e. Actually it started out ta be a nice week-end, leaving; Shere Friday evening to visit relatives in Elmira, but it was suggested that a visit ta the new track (it just opened Fi-' tday) wauld be a goad idea. Actually aur readers knaw that we usually lare aur money in August, but we thaught maybe this time of year would change aur luck. It didn't. Mohawk Raceway is a modemn new track situated at i 14 Campbellville, a littie place of somne 250 inhabîtants. It is al fine piece af architecture, complete with a glass-enclosedý ,dining area and launge with a camplete view af the ttters. Hawever, if the crowd is any indication, they shauld have built the grand-stand twice as big. It seats between ,0 and 3,000 and there must have been over 5,000 there Str day night. Maybe we should have sald aur seats. 1 Thank gaadness we missed the first race and left befare the last - saved six bucks right there. This time we had a system - the aId scribe was taking the lang-shats, cur brather-in-law the favaurites, and we were poolingý 4 the winnings. That (winnings that is) amaunted ta $8.20 in i! the fourth race, while aur 10-1 chaice ta win ended up third.! *From then an we didn't even came close. * We decided ta wager an local nags but it wasn't theiri onight. In the fifth it was an entry fram Russell McQuaid of {Courtice and an Orono horse, awned by Meadowview Farm *and trained by Jack Reid. We ignored the Oshawa hosses- *sa they had twa winners and a third in the seven races we saw. One of thest days we're going ta click, but in the ameantime any donations ta caver the cast of "research" àthat went into this column will be accepted. Mail your, cheques ta the Sparts Editar, Canadian Statesman, Bow- mnanville, Ontario. t t i. t i. WHERE ARE FISHERMEN?
