Two items came to our attention necently. Both dealt with one of the end praducts af our mass educational sys- tem. Margaret Robinson, the netining president of the Ontanio Secandary School Teachers' Federation said in Toronto recently that "mass education, so fan, has tended to produce an aven- age - confonmists who think what they are told ta think and generally do what they are told ta do - on else!" Earlier, we had received clippings from the Kirkiand Lake Northemn Daily News where one teacher, a Dur- ham County native is daing his utmost ta graduate non-canformists who think for themselves . . . and his pupils re- gard him with great esteem. Mind you, he cames f rom a long line of non-con- fonmists. His name is Richard Bawles, son of Wilfred G. Bowvles of Nestieton, and grandsan of the late Chancellor Dr. R. P. Bowies, neithen of wham cauld even be termed canformists. On many occasions when we visited at the Bowles' residence the three men men- tioned above were present. After a few minutes of greeting, these sessions al- ways develaped into stimulating dis- cussions with ahi sides of the argument being presented with great skill and, at times, considerable heat. Apparently, this background plus his own intelligence has been put ta good u.se by Richard Bowles now teach- ing history in Kirkiand Lake. Two of his top students necently attended the United Nations confenence at Lake Couchiching where they tahked an American high schaai teacher into a corner and surprised an American professar with the tities of the books they had read. When questioned about their familiarity with such items, they gave full credit to their teacher Rich- ard Bowles who teaches them to argue a subject from bath sides, something, apparently unheard of by the Ameni- cans at the conference. Our congratulations to Dick Bowl- es for his efforts in trying ta teach his students to think for themselves in- stead of accepting at face value every- thing that is taught ta them. His grand- father, a great educator, would have been extmemely proud of him, as in- deed his f ather must be. In this day and age, we need more yaungsters, teachers and citizens gen- erally wiliing to make the effort re- quired ta think through problems, to come to fîrm conclusions based on dis- cussions. There are far toa many wishy- washy types afraid to take a stand on anything for fear of offending some- one or being considered radicals. Nowa- days, unfortunately, if someone dis- agrees with something we say or write, we tend ta be affended at their auda- city in daring ta contradict us, but ail tao often lack the courage or the facts ta back up what we have said. We are ail for the good aid days when it was fashionabie ta argue about almost anything. Nobody took particu- Ian offense. It was ahl part af living and gaod mental exercise. We are delighted ta hear that Dick Bowles is daing his best to make certain his students not only lave an argument, but do enough extra curricular reading sa they knaw their subjeets. We need more of this type af teaching.
