SPORTOPICS BRENT HUGHES - L.A. KINGS Every time this reporter goes ta Maple Leaf Garitis ýe we invariably take a look at the hockey prgrain ta ce rt where some o! the players hall fram - what their height -and weigbt is, etc. Wben Bowmanvile resident, Ennie Dick- ens, was toiling in the N.H.L., we could always say that he le! lived here - but nowhere did the town's name appean in 11 the league statistics, because Ennie originally came from western Canada. Not oniy was Bowmanville listed as the birthplace ý1 ane o! tbe performers wben Las Angeles visited the Leafs, but how often do you get ta see one of your neighbors playing in the N.H.L. as well ? O! course we're referring ta Brent Hughes, son a! Mr. and Mns, Harry Hughes, 244 Liberty Street North. The program read:- Brent Hughes, 6', 200 lbs., born Bowmanville, Ont., played last year with Memphis. And you can well belleve that it made us feel pnetty goad wben we saw that. To the best o! aur knowledge, Brent is the only BowmanviUle player ta ever make ut ta the National Hockey League. At 24 years o! age, Hughes is the youngest defenceman on the team and only the third youngest player on the entire roster. We tried ta get Bnent's attention, as the big number five limbered up before the game, and when he spatted us and came skating aven ta tbe boards, the youngsters quickly moved in ta obtain bis autograpb. Needless ta say we didn't have much time or appartunity ta taik. Aften playing about six minutes of the opening peniod, mastly when L.A. was sharthanded, Brent stopped a drive on the ankle that put bim out o! action at the 13 minute mark. Aften a brie! trip ta the dressing naom with ex-Mari. bora tramner, Norm Mackie, aur hera was back an the ice again, without missing a shift. Following the game, he xvas stil limping quite badly, but couldn't remember who fired the shot, just that ut hurt like the devii, and meant that he performed pnactically on one ieg for most o! the game. Although we'ne admittedly prejudlced, this corner tbougbt that he piayed weli too. Brent carried Ron Ellis into the dasber at centre, aften only 51 seconds of the middle session, resulting in the glass being broken. Ellis gat even when he deposited Brent an his posteruon, just as it appeared that Hughes had made a great move at the point, as L.A. bad a power-play going. The Bowmanville native had another chance inid-way in the third, once more from the point, as the Kings again had a man advantage. The slap-shot went a couple of feet wide, just as we were thinking that it wauld top off aur stary If he scored. Between periods we talked with Ron McGratb, hockey writer with the Las Angeles Daiiy Tribune, Who told us that "Hughes bas really came along since jaining the club, and is piaying goad, solid, heads-up hockey." After the game, defeat didn't rest too well with coach "Red" Kelly, understandably enough with the Kings figbting fan first place and a big chunk of bonus money. Thenefore we didn't get into the dressing room. When Brent emerged he was carrying a huge ice-pack for bis ankle and a couple of hockey sticks, not ta mention a slightiy puffed upper lip and of course the limp. Above bis nigbt eye was evidence a!fli stitches worth o! damage caused when Boston's John McKenzie used bis stick, incurring a major penalty. In spite a! the Bruins' new- !ound rougbness, Brent considers Toronto the taughest teamn ta play against. Coach Kelly allowed as ta how "Brent Hughes dldn't play bis usually strong game", wbile this biased spectator thought he iooked neal good. However, Brent bad told us he found tbe gaing tough aften being bit by the puck. Hughes bas now played 39 games with the Kings. League records wbich do not include Las Angeles' games duning the past week, show hum with two goals, seven assusts and,ï minutes In penalties a!ter 37 cantests. His finst N.H.L. goal was scored against the Hawtvks Dennis Dejondy, on a siap-shot, as he moved inside the blue line. It goes witbout saying, that it was quite a thrill, but, "what pleased me most was that it was a 'good' goal. It was. a low, bard shot that went rigbt In." When Brent was again surrounded by autognaph seekers, after the game, we offered ta carry bis sticks and Ice-pack - and bad plenty of time ta inspect the curved biade. "Oh tbat's last yean's model - started using the curved stick in Memphis, but the one I use now is curved even mare. Nothing like Hull and Mikita thougb," Brent stated, "ll bet If they put their sticks together, the blades would fonm a circle." The Kings arrived in Toronto, Fniday aftennoon a! ter playlng in Philadelphia (before the roof was damaged) Thunsday nlght. When the plane left at 9:30 Sunday maorn- ing, except for being able ta visit with bis family, Brent was undoubtediy happy ta netunn ta sunny California. The tempenatune around the L.A. - Long Beach area bas been in the 80 degnee range, and one day it bit 90 degnees. As Brent said, "It's pnetty nice ta be able ta neturn home fnom practice and head straigbt for the swimming pool." Brent Is married ta the former Sandra Chaskavich of R.R. 3, Bowmanviile. Sandra played sevenal years with the DIDJA HEAR ? It was bound ta bappen sooner or later. Ini a necent game the refenee raised bis arm ta signal a deiayed penalty. the foui being committed ln the opposition's end. The goal- keeper dashed for bis bench as a defencernan took the puclc behind bis own net ta set-up the six man attack. As a team-mate headed ln front a! bis own net, the defencemnan passed him the puck. Would yau believe - i hit the back a! bis skate, caromed into the net and the8 offending team had a gif t goal. Can't nemember when, where an ln what league the action occurred - but lt's true!
