Many aclivities wcre plan- ned for this wcekcnd camp. A log cabin was la be built, practical experience an how ta beat the lent or but, fire- llgbting, winter sports, cook- lng, and mosl of ail, how 10 keep yourself warmn and dry, Again, a camp like this was self-qustaincd. T h e Scouts~ made up the menu, keeping the Idea that the food must not freeze. Also, ail provisions such as cooking equipment, transportation, axes and many more supplies were provided by the Scouts. The seven members of the Troop plus two leaders slartcd tbe camp off by getling the supplies and gear from the cars down la the campsile. The slope of the bill proposed a problem afler the second and third trip la the cars. The path was getting Icy and often you would sec some Scout slîding down wlth the gear flying ln the air. Wben aIl the gear and sup- plies was down aI the camp- site, lents wcre 10 be raiscd. Here the Scouts were instruct- ed ta gel boughs from cedar and spruce trees. Whcn a sufficient number of boughs were present they were placed ln 10' x 10' square and 8' x 8' square. With about six tinches of layers on the ground tbe Scouts laid the plastic ground sheet an top of the boughs, and then the lents werc raised on the proposed area. Tbe Scouts were bold whal use the boughs and plastic were. Tbe boughs provided a mattress and the plastic stop- pcd the moisture from coming through the boltom of the lent. With ail the gear ln the lents, a fine was made la pro- vide beal and also la heal waler for bol chocolale. Bedding down was easy for the boys. The gear lhey brought pnovided thern with a warm, dry nighl. Saturday morning they had breakfast and started on their camping grounds north of Tyrone. The raising of the log "fort" was going ta be a long process. The Scouts went out and got cedar rails and three Inch 1og poles. Stakes were driven ln the ground to provide a "'siot" for the pales to alide Into. After about six hours of work, which con- sisted of cutting cedar rails and collecting more boughs for the roof, their but was ready. It stood about four feet bigh and about eight feet, long. Inside the but therel were places for candies on' the walls and a place for the stove. The stave was made of an old five-gallon can with a hole cutl n the side and top. An elbow stove pipe was put In the hole on the top of the can and firewood was "fed" through the hole ln the side At night the boys b.d fun with Iheir sports activities. Bedding was again ln process but this time instead of a lent, they sic pt ln the but. With the wood burning ln the stove and candies lit, a feeling of warmlh and pleasure came over the boys. Here was their own "hut", somethIng they could caîl their own, and use over and over again. Not one persan was cold and the boys were eager ta get up ln the mornlng. Sunday's breakfast went fast and the day's activities came to life. Snowshoes and to- boggans were the tools to be used ln the day's activities. Whlle some boys were sliding down the hili, others were out with the snowshoes, walking ln the fields. The Scouts were kept quite busy ln their activi- ties throughout the day. Closing a! the camp was a sad moment for the Scouts. They wanted to stay out for another couple of days but the leader was tired and had to go to work ln the following days and their parents mighl not go along with their Ideas. But with the but up, and the experience the boys were given over the weekend, more camps are scheduled for the winter months. The Scouts that survived the weekend are Ron Mar- chand, Jeff Brooks, Mark Chipman, Dale Rundle, Don Childs and Bob Cox. The leaders were Fred McMann, John Neugbton and Harold Knigbl. In the future the Scouts will be going to tbe Bancroft and Orillia areas for wlnter camping and Ice fishing.
