Irrespective of the political views held by any person in Durham Coun- ty ail should feel a great measure ofpieand satisfaction that Hion. N.W owell, K. C., the represen- tative for Durham County in tie House of Coinmons at Ottawa, and former member of the Cabinet and President of the Privy Council, has bQen s0 favorably mentioned in the newspapers of ' different countries for the abiiity and good sense shown as one of Canadla's representatives at recent conference of the League of Nations at Geneva, Switzerland. In an enlightening review of the work done by the League of Nations' Assembiy at Geneva, the special. cor- respondent of the London, (Engiand) Daily Telegrapi concludes wbat he bas to say witb the statement that what was accomplishied was dlue to the efforts of about haîf a dozea men in the Assembly. Combined with th s be bas a mind of extraordinary clearness and a grasp of detail and a practical - wisdom which again and againi brought order out of confu- sion and saved the Assembly from impasses into whichà it seem~ed about to drift. Hon, Mr. Balfour, thougb bis contributions to the debates were often in the nature of negative criti- cism.i was always aile from bis un- rivalled store of experience of public aff airs to aff ord invaluable practical guidance while bis unfailing tact and, urbanity enabied bimn to sootie op-. position or find a happy mediunm which ail could accept. Lord Robert Cecil, with bis unquenchable enthus- iasm and optimism in the cause of peace, was, if one may so put it, the chief motive power of the As- sembly. The fourtb namne mentioned is that, of Hon. N. W. Rowell of Canada., 0f hiru it is said: "Mn. Rowell, thougi in tie carly stages of the pl!oceedings he spoke withrnuch diffildence, soon began to miake bis presence felt. The practical value of bis addresses, com- binied witb bis frank straightforwardi manner and bis clear and confident knowledge of tic work of tic Asseni- bly, soon established bim as one o its most valuable menibers." WEST DURHAM BOYS. In 1910 when Rev. John Garbutt and the senior editor were delegates fromt the Bay of Quinte Conference to the General Conference at Victor- ia, B. C., we were entertained at din ner one evening by Mr. and Mrs. Wn. 1-1. Bone, at their beautiful re.sidence "Ston-ehenge", 1788 Rock- ]and Ave., when we met their daugb- ters, Misses Lena and Genevieve, a married daughter, Maude E., wif e of Dr. McMicking, and son Frank S. That evening is one of the pleasant memnories of our sojourn in the charming city of Victoria. Mr. and Mrs. Done have since visited Mrs. John flamlyn, a' cousin, in Bowmnan- ville, when on a trip to New York, Philadelphia and other cities. Mr. Bone was born in Bo-wýmanvilie, in 1855 ,and wbeni quite young bis parents in 1863 moved to Victoria, B. C. In a British Columbia Trade ,Magazine, "Tbe Retailer", is a sketch Of. "B. C. Merchants Who Have Made Good" and a life-like portrait of Mr. Bone graces a page containing an interesting account of bis business career. Hie is manager of The T. N. Hibben Co., well-kniown Books4el- lers and Stationers, establlshed in 1858, and occupying The Hlibben- Bone Building, a very fine 4-storey relnfrcedconcrete j s2tructure on Government Street. The sketch says: Mr. Bone bas pined is faith from bis $15-a-qnonth start in live to business integrity begotten of his religlous principles, hard work, total abstinence and physical fitness. He bas neyer smioked and the article concludes "His physical condition is surely somiething to be envied." We heantily commend'the foregoing to our young men as a worthy example to be'f ollowed in, their career. TRICKERY.
