Dear Editor,-When I peniied a f ew notes recentiy cf Hampton, its people, etc., I had ne thought cf ex- tending them te Eanisklllen and Ty- rone. It would be difficuit te re- caîl everythiag, even if space were «available, but my attention has been called te some omissions about Ennis- killen which may be cf iaterest te record. 3 Th 'e early places cf store-business I remember, were D. W. McLeod's, John Pierce's, Samuel Trewin's, Hut- chinsen and Brisbin's (in 1 867) inter carried o~n by Mr. Robert Hutchinson until his removal te Listowel in 1888. The clerks I recali were Jacob Scot%, Snndy McLeod,, Samuel Bingham and John C. Mitchell. Drs. Wm. H1iler >and McCuleougli were the ehirlest physicianis. The former died in 11870, and was succeeded, by his brother Solomon Cartwright Hiler now of Bowmanviiie, who inheriteà the ame and reputatien of his broth- er William and he toc, made good. In 1864 a young man cf the neighbor- hood te the south east, James W. McLaughlin, graduated in Medicine and he began practice here. In 1870 he erected the fine brick residence tll receatly occupied by Dr. C. W. Siemon and new by Dr. H. Ferguson, the present local physicin. Dr. John C. Mitchell began practice in medicine in Newtonvîlle ia 1874, and a f ew years later came to Enniskil- Iea where he had been a store clerk adpractised for a aumber cf years. I made some refereace te the Sylvester Fouadry-but la the early sixties it was carried on by D. W. McLeod. Ia 1867 or 186S, Robert McLaugh- lin left ilittle farn (and shop by the road-side) near Tyrone, and open- ed up a carniage and wagon shop ia Eaaiskillen.- He did a tiriviag business-was honest and onscien- tieus la ail his work aad deai gs, and doubtiess these elemnts ci n ~ibutëd te the woaderful success that has marked his whole business career. I have been iaformed that Isaiah Tole, father cf Mr. Levi A. W. Tole, the Bowmaaville Auctioneer,. was among the firet settlers, se aise the Montgomery famiiy. John, son cf Andrcw Montgomery, a popular and fine lookiag young man, graduated as n physician in 1867 and prnctised for years la Bethnny and B3lac-ksock. A sister Mrs. J. J. Gýibson lives la Bowmaaville. The Presbyteriaa Church under the care cf Rev. John Smith from 1851-1869 was largeiy attcnded, its members coming n distance cf froém 8 te 10 miles, filliag the church every Sabbath afteraoon. Se also was the Weslcynn Mcthodist Churci with its service at 6.30 p. m. Ina the year 1873 the M. E. Church erected a ned brick building on the'opposite side cf the street-later burat dewn, and the new une erected in its place wns chosen as the one for contiaued use at the Union off 1884. Editor's Note-Belevlng that han.- dreds cf cuir readers far and near rend these memnory sketches by Rev. D. Rogers and thatlanother man stffi possessing a mernory thnt ante-dates hie by several years wehave request- ed Mr. L. A. W, Tole ta write cf an eanlier pcrled tisa is evered by Hrcy. Rogers. WHY SHORT CALF CLUB ? N7r. Editor-In your paper of the tenth inst., I noticed a glowing add for Skorthorn cattie, under t~he, head- line of "Durham County Shoxthorn Caif Club", published by the West Durham Agricultural Society. 1 would like to ask if this Society is especWaly interested in Shorthorn Cattle ? If so, better strike the rest of the cattie -breecis off the prize list. If not ' why Shorthorns ? Must a boy to enter this club be forced to take Shorthorns when his better judgment justly tells hlm there is greater possibilities in Hoîsteins or some 'other breed ? Why not give the boy his choice, and not use the Agricultural Society to boost any one breed ?All we ask is a fair deal. R. R. STEVENS, Holstein Breeder.
