Dudley' llorsey Block Phone 225 House 272 Bowmanville BOWMANVILLE, APRIL 21, 1921' SCHOOL DAY SKETCHES "School days, school days, dear old I Golden Rule Days, Reading and Writing and 'Rithmetic, Taugbt, to the tune of a hickory stick". Soine time ago the Senior Editor1 made a suggestion re Tyronie school, days of the 8's. Personally, 1I know of no one more likely ta do justice to the subject tban tbe Rev.1 S. G. Brown, B. A., who mqade the request, seeing that tbe Brown boys were ever noted for tbeir intellectual ability. Nothing would give tbe, old girls and boys more pleasure tban a series of; articles by S. G., or T. A., or both together., Why lot 1bave a genuine Canadian edition, of "Tom Brown's School Days", which would be sure to make as delightful rending as tbe Euglisb version? Hope it may soon follow these few recollections whicb the writer doas not guarantee to be in any regular form., To begin, then, 1 suppose there are yet some oldest i#habitants, wbo may remember tbe, gaunt frame school bouse which did duty for tbe young and nising generations until about tbirty yearsago, wben it wau accidentally burned fromn the flames, of a ýhouse to tbe west of it-no one weeping over the loss. Sad to say, tbe kids were pain- fully rejoiced to witness the disap- pearance of a building entirely lac1k- ingý in beauty or symmetry. True, it was comümodious;-that much miay be granted. 'But so is a barrn. Withiu its well-ventîlated clap- board walls oua alternataly froze in' winter and meltad in summer, and yat we neyer heard of anyattacks of pneumonia consequent upon, axpos. une. The teachers fared not se badly lu sumamer as their respective desks to the central south made them more immune to the glaring rays through unshaded windows, but in winter they were furthast £rom the good old wood-stove at the north and ýwich reliaved the monotany of the' big boys wbo acted as stokers. As for the building, it was a two- storey affair-quite pretentious in its day. In its grades, strangely an- ough, the Upper Scbool was the Low- er School and the Lowen School was the Upper Scbool. Iu that day aur forefathers did not beliave in put- ting the yot4%gest and weakest onthe ground floo--no sucb tbiug, let them limb to the top, it would strengtheu their young legs and incidentaily re- mind tbemi of that noblest emula- tien of cildhood-Excelsior! Providence, who guards the lanmbi of the flock in a towu without fira protection, dacreed that no abani, sbould befaîl them, inasmnucb as tbe Ibuilding eventually burned down ou a Saturday. Pence to its ashas! clumsy and unprepossessing as to ex- tenior, equipped in the usual meagne style of the age, but boasting one feature for whîch it was surpassad -the quality of its teachens. The first of these whom I ra- memberdistinctly as the epitoma of evarything kind and balpful wâs Miss Carnie Gibband. No littia beart went comfortless, no groping mind left mystified thnough her staadily sympatbetic guidance from day ta day. Patience and poise she pos- sessed in a wonderful degnea. As she was, se sha is, iune present home in Toronto, a blessing and com- fort to those of lier own housebold and a very wide circle of friands. Another lady who taugbt in ber ginlhood at Tyrone was Miss Lizzie Coram--now Mrs. Wesley Couch, Bow- mauville. Her veny prasence in the school-room was wont to dispel any glooni which lingered there. Need- less, to say, she won golden opinions from ail the kiddias, for thougb in- tensely faithful iu the discharge of ber duties ber aim was ever to 'per- suade nathar than compal, te lead rather than driva. 0f the Miss Tuer whom "West Durham Boy" mentions as following Miss Gbbard, I have no racollection but as mucli of mytime was spent ait Grandfather Jardine's,.in my early childhood, it must ha that 1 missad the benefit of that lady's tuition. Whan Miss Watson, howaver, step- ped upon the dias to taach the young ideas (or imps) how to shoot, we surely aIl were there a goodly par-t- ien of the time. Miss Watson was a very capable young lady, and hailing from the larger places of the earth was leoked upon with awe, net te, say admiration. Strangely, enough, al memory of ber qualifications as a teac.her bas flown, our minds no doubt lowed _wa s severe and Well.deserved, but the satisfaction of disassembling the teacher sang loud within bis wick- cd boyish heart a song of victory. The same lad is nowa, quiet law- abiding citizen of a Ilourishing city, and no doubt has long since forgot- ten the incident which made him the admired hero of the hour in the eyes of less daring young ràseau. Miss Watson very hikely, tba, bas long Wince forgiven and forgôtten the young culprit, and will be ready to laugh witb those of us who reniember some of the pranks of other days. Somet-ie, too, perhaps, not so many years distant,-we, shall ail laugh at the unspeakable fashions of to-day, which will seem every whit as ridic- ulous as those of f orty yaars ago.
