Moore, King-st., Newcastle, when about forty friends of Miss Eva Riekard, the popular bride of this week, met to shower hier with gifts and good wishes. -After the guests had assembled the bride elect was'ushered into the, living- room a veritable bower of spring- time with its unique decoration of apple blossoms, white ilacs, narcissi and tulips, 'where under the chande- lier beautifully festooned with white streamers and pink roses. The bride occupied the seat of honor opposite a huge basket cleverly decorated to represent a rose peony and overfiow- ing with gifts. A beautiful bouquet of narcissi,' tulips, and maidenhair fern was presented by Mrs. J. Uglow, who in'a f ew well-chosen words of goodwill and aprcation welcomed the bride to New= te. Appropriate solos were sung by Mesdames W. Jamieson, F. Branton and Miss Mason. Alter a dainty lunch served by-the hostesses Mesdames W. Moore, J. W. Bradley, W. eJamieson and F. Butler the rest ol the even- ing was spent in music and social intercourse. FORMER CITIZEN'S' DEMISE Mr'. John H. Varcoe, Toronto. The many friends and acquaint- ances of the late John H. Varcoe're- ceived a severe shock on Wednes- day morning when a telegram reached here saying he had passed away at Niagara Falls, N, Y., aethe resuit of ulcers ia stomiach. He was bora and raised in this towýn and made maay friends wherever hle went. He has resided on Pape Avenue, Toron- to, for several years. He leaves to moura his loss hiswif e, one son, two daughters-Mr. Fred Maynard and Mrs. E. Meredith, ail of Toronto;, and two brothers-Charles of Detroit and George, of Bowmanville, from whose home he was buried on Friday, May 13.
