jThe Shop Th at Leadsj The Spirit ofz Giing' BOWMANVILLE, DEC. 7th., 1922.1 LETTER FROM MR. JOHN ELLIOTT, B. A. We are privilegedl to publish this interesting letter from Mr- John Elliott, B. A.,1 eormer esteemed School, and we are veryý glad to pass it round to the many graduates and ex-students of the School.-Editor. To The Literary Society of Bowman- ville High School. Ipromised, or it was a threat, that 1 would write once more to the Lit- erary Society of Bowmanville lligh School before ail the students wbo remember me have passed out into the big world. A late copy o'f'The Statesman was1 a remin4der, in its mention of the comning school oratorical conteet, one of the(- best thîngs the sehool could have. M first thought was -that 1 knew the comipeting studIents. My next waýs that 1 couldi not guess the winnecrs, and my third was that win or !ose in this tbey all coula and, I believed, would be winners in the arenia of 1f e. These oratorical 'prizes specially interLýst me because I knewan high- ly esteemed the donors-M'âr. D. G. M .Galbraith and the late Mrs. T. W. Jolliff e and Mr. W. W. Tamblyn, M. A.,Some of you may not know of FABLE 0F THE FOOLISH BUYERi There was once a Foolish, Citizen, wvho had a Dollar to spend. He said to himiself, "I will take my Dollar to Toronto and spend it! where the spending le good"'. And 1he, took hie Dollar to Toronto andvisited the miovies and purchased a--tooth- )rush andbought-a--q 4 lunch an--d somne salted peanuts und c aught a ride homne, as hie had caught An-d onc-e more at home and his Dollar gone, and being very' tired, he £el! asleep in his chair and dream- ed: Hie dreamed that he wýas not one but ten thousand men and that bey- ing gone to, Toronto with hie Dol- lar (now 10,000 of tchem) he had fildthe streets, and the movies had to hod pec'i sessionls to get them, ail in, and the shops were swarmed with buyers of tooth hrushes and of salted peanuts. And 'business- was very good in Toronto. So much so, that when he caught a ride (now 10,000 of them-i) for Bowmianville, t he movie manin i his prospierity went and bought himiself an- automrobile, and the tooth brush mnan was so tickled he went and bought bhis wife a fur coat, and the mn wo o salted peanuts purchased bis kid a base hall bat. And everybody was, happy-IN TOIRONTO. iGRÂCE CHURCH,' WINNIPEG Our citiz-ens who heard recently the Rev. Dr. C. L. Mclrvine, Pastor of Grace Church, Winnipeg, preach in Bowmanville Methodi st Church, wilI be interested in hearing that, in a letter just to hand from a relative of the editor,' Grace Church has just re-ceived over a hiundred new mem- bers. e kriter also sy am- glad some Bowmanville people sub- scribed liberally to, the Mortgage Fund of Grace Church. Money can- flot pay for what Grace Church has meant and now means to me. Win- nipeg might have been a vé)Yy lonely place for me had I flot joined Grace or some other church, and it has truly given a great. contribution to Western Methodism. TPhat it is ap- preci ated by other girls, too, is evi- dent from the fact thatsome of them are giving $50 and $100, a year for four years towards the debt. Be- sides our personal subserîptions dur Girls' Guild is pledged to raise $500 yearly to the ýMortgage Fund. People in the East-are responding nobly to Dr. Mclrvine's appeal. Two men who were short of money gave h7pney-one $100 worth and another haif,-aa ton-1000 Ibs. It is being sold here at $1 for a 10 lb peul. 1 bought a peul and found it very good, too". 4yDream Gir Te c o4 w-- f [ G.
