In this new era of increased social awareness, Canadian hcôs- pitals are taking a more active role in helping their community meet the total hiealth care needs'of Canadian society. They are extending their traditional activity of being centres of healing to inchide, when necessary, services to meet the total health needs of the community. This often means developing more varied types of treatment, reha- bilitation and preventative programs, and other services ofteni in corjunction with others. In a constantly changing envirnnt trýýodayý, there are the requisites of imeeting and resolving problem-s rltn to advancements in science and technology, air andiwater pollutioni, drugs and drug use and family planning. The theme of Canada'Hospital Day 1972 is "This is the Housj-e the Citizens Buit . . .". Our hospitals are more than structures of stone, cernent and glass, containing a vast range of equiýpmett ndç facilities. They are living entities whose most important asi people - the many thousands of dedicated human befings wos lives are directed to maintaining and improving the level of well-be- ing of alI Canadians. There is still much to be done in the hospital and health care field. To accomplish this will require not only the re-dedfication of ail persons involved in the, provision of health care services, but their co-operation as well, along with a'higher level of concern on the part of the public. Only with renewed dedication and a higher level of awareness of the problems that exist will we be able to solve existing problerns and go on to face future challenges. This is a must, if we are to ensure the riglit of good health to ail Canadians. IVAN M. HOBBS, Mayor.
