SOne of the factors contribut- h îng to the marked growth in t consumer credit was the steadyc expansion and increased stab-s ility of personal incomes since( World War 71. A period. of a-h most uninteri-upted prosperityc and comparatively high em-t ploymnent enabled consumera to buy on credit, confident that tbey would 6e able to repaY from future earnings. The growth was also intensifled by a sharp rise in personal ex-t pectations and demands foi: what were once consideiled1 luxurv items.1 Statistîcs are cited which1 show nearly $12.7 billion of consumer credit was outstand-1 ing at the end of 1971 - ani amount equivalent to 21.56 per cent of that year's total per- sonalI disposable income. The rapid upsurge in the use o! (credit 'bas consumer educa- tion Tin recent years, agencieq devoted solely 10 aiding the lients Car for COUNTV CHRY LER- ODGELTIJ over-extended debtor haýive! been established in many' Canadian çities, financed in part by the banking industry. In additi 'on, governments and various consumer credit grant- ors are now offering programs of consumer education in per- sonal financial management and the proper use of credit. Instailment credit, the chief component. of consumer credit, has also grown significantly in the past two decades. Although credit users as a whole repre- sent a broad cross-section of Canada's income 'and occupa- tional groups, the main users of consumer credit are f amily units,, especilally those in younger age groups. "Parallel wîth the evolution of the family cycle, the peak period ln the use of consumer credit occurs amongst those in the late thirties with a graduaI diminishing in requirements thereafter," the Commercial Letter states. "It would appear that moet borrowers use cre- dit to augment income during the year of heaviest f amily responsibilityla ntcpio of lessened expenses and hîgh.. er earnings in lateryears." Consumer credit in its many forms bas become so much a way o! life for the modern consumer that il is taken for granted. The Commercial Let- ter cautions that while every effort mugst 6e made to ensure the effective functioniug of the market for consumer cr- dit, "au equal effort should e extended to provide those edu-1 cational f acilities that will ert sure that the user O!fos credýcit is i'Ls lmRstcrand not ifiî- SaMEIm-, îch 17, member h. ýa bîo- rsEmrilvy and Mis. held on Lat tWO sFuneisi )pkins of.- was in Messrs. !îun, Rus.
