BOWLS 873 -- Larry Bishop, of the Youth Bowling League, rolled a big 341-235-297 game last Saturday at Liberty Bowl. That's mighty nice rolling, Larry. Men's Town League by Jim Clarke McNulty's Sports and Coun- ty Chrysler skated away from last Thursday evening's sea- son opening doubleheader victorious. In the first game, the Sportsmen posted a 6-4 tri- umph over a hustling Kramp Furniture gang. The late match saw County deal Locke TV a 4-2 loss in a speedy affair. Both games produced some surprisingly good mom- ents for the year's first twin bill action. Steve Burns looked like he has been on ice all summer, as he displayed his scoring flair, counting four of McNulty's six goals. Doug. Parker teamed slickly with "Bullseye" Burns as he added a goal and three assists. Bruce Meadows click- ed for their other score. Veteran defenceman Howie Pollard chipped in two assists. For the Furniture flock, first year man Dean Cox contributed a pair of tallies, w Harness and Brian How- netting the others. The 1<-73 scoring and M.V.P. winner, Rick Woolner, had two assists for the losers, as did a newcomer to the league, Al Junkin. McNultys built up a 3-0 first period lead, but Kramps regrouped to tie it at 3-3 after 10:29 of the second period on Cox's first goal. A little more than a minute later (11:44), Meadows beat Kramps goalie "Smokey" Hayes, to regain the lead for the winners. MeNultys led 5-3 and then 5-4 when Cox counted again at 18:22 of the final period. The Furniture crowd ap- plied pressure but Burns' emnfo-nt forth anoal pinrh- ed the McNulty victory. Two of the Sportsmen's goals were power play efforts. Officials Bob Hellam and Leo Kelly handed out just five sentences with Kramps netting four. In the late encounter, Locke's lean lineup of eight men put up a gallant struggle before bowing 4-2 to County Chrysler. Some superlative netminding by Ken Veitch kept the TV crowd in conten- tion throughout. The winners, who led 4-0 after 40 minutes of intense action, were turned away empty handed time after time as Veitch was outstanding. The winners' goals were shared by Brian Bradley (three points), Mur- ray O'Brien, Lanny Burns (another three pointer) and Ray Pickell. Lockes' only goals came during the final 20 minutes with Larry Perris (a 21 goal man last year) and rookie Brian Rowe counting. County's opening goal at 8:24 of the first, climaxed a power play blitz. Both teams drew a pair of minor penalties. Major Lge. Junior 'C' Red Eagles Drop Opener to Lindsay Muskies The young Red Eagle team opened their schedule against an experienced Lindsay club and put up a good show considering they only have four members of last year's Red Eagles team skating for them. We feel quite sure this team will be able to hold their own against any of the other six teams in the league after a few games. In the first period the Eagles more than held their own and were unfortu- nately beaten by the goalie on more than one occasion. With seven seconds to go in the period Oliver scored for the Muskies. How- ever, in the third period the Eagles came out strong and got two goals early in the period both being scored by Paul Forsey. They kept up this pace and on several occasions it looked as if the score would be tied, but with eight minutes to go in the game a Lindsay player fired a hard shot that hit goalie "Slip" Rowe on the shoulder, glanced up and hit his face mask which stunned him and as the puck fell at his feet a Lindsay player raced in for the kill. Bill Abercrombie scored - then with five minutes to go Jenkins got the fifth and final goal of the game. The Eagles played most of the second and third periods minus their veteran Captain Bruce Osborne who paid a visit to the local hospital for a few stitches. 'Slip" Rowe ail the way in goal will be spelled by another excellent goalie Randy Thiele up from last year's Juvenile club. This year's defence includes two of last year's Jr. players, Steve Davey and Bruce Osborne plus Ron Strike, Jeff Legere and Rick Truax three fine prospects up from the Midget ranks, while the sixth defenceman Ted Puk comes from last ypar's Ban- tam All Star Club. One line consists of centre Rory Gibbs flanked by two of last year's Junior players Glenn Rice and Paul Forsey. The next line is centred by Bill Wagar from Newcastle who has All Emard and John Colwell as wingers and anoth- er returnee Rolly Simpson centres the line for Mike Cornell and Dennis Living- stone. Remember fans the Red Eagles play every Sunday night and needs lots of vocal support. Coach George Caw- ker and Manager Carl Devitt are sure that with your help and lots of cheering you will have a winner this season Officials of the team want t( hear the fans and if they heai you the boys will hear you and get a lift knowing you arc behind them. We would alsho like to mention our new assistant manager Keith Smith, no stranger to most of the fans and boys and our new trainer Don Harvey well known in the Arena and back this year with a real job. Knapp's Major Bantams Chalk Up 3 More Wins Knapp's Towing Major Ban- tams extended their winning streak to five in a row with wins over Bay Ridges, Whitby and Cobourg to end their pre-season exhibition games. Sun., Oct. 7th at Bay Ridges, Knapp's opened a 3-0 lead before running into numerous penalties that allowed the opposition to score two late goals. Scoring for Bowman- ville were Jerry Johnston from Terry Sarginson, Sargin- son assisted by Johnston and Chris Marchant and Robert Ormiston from Tom Connell and John Hogarth. Unfortu- nately, tempers flared at the end of the game resulting in a brawl that marred an other- wise well played contest. Knapp's took 38 -minutes in penalties plus two game misconducts. On Wed., Oct. 10, Whitby Big Mac's were the opposition at Memorial Arena and Knapp's skated to a well earned 3-0 win. Robert Ormiston, unas- sisted, and Eddie Gruyters from Gord Wallace scored in the first period with Jerry Johnston from Terry Sargin- son and John Conboy in the second. Lennie Chappell and Tim Dyck were the outstand- ing players of this game as they stopped a lot of tough shots. On Sun., Oct. 14th at Cobourg Jerry Leddy provid- ed the scoring punch as he tallied three times and assist- ed on two others as Knapp's won by an 8-4 score. This would have been much higher except for excellent goaltend- ing by Cobourg. Besides Leddy's hat-trick the-other scorers were Bob Bickle with two and singles by Terry Sarginson, Tom Connell and Robert Ormiston. Assisting were John Davis twice and one each to Connell, Bickle, Hogarth, -Conboy and Storgaard. Knapp's Bantams now open their regular schedule at home to Bay Ridges. Mary Brown's Novices Split Pair on Weekend On Saturday, Mary Brown's Novice All-Stars opened their 1973-74 season with a convinc- ing 8-0 win over Newcastle Atom All-Stars in an exhibi- tion game at Bowmanville. The local squad opened up a 5-0 lead in the first period with Jeff Logan scoring first from Robbie Green. Logan also scored the second goal with the assist to Shaughn Houston. Timmy Preston got the third marker unassisted. Robbie Green made the count 4-0 cashing in on a pass from Jeff Logan and Todd Tremblay. Scott Masters opened the scoring for Bow- manville on a corner pass out from Tim Preston. David. Hogarth fired a shot into the corner of the net to end Bowmanville's scoring on a face-off pass from Kevin Norton. Both Scott Bate and Todd Stephens played extremely well in goal for the second straight game. Last season's scoring champ, Steve Burns headed their offensive charge as he collected four goals as Brooks downed Walter Frank Real Estate 8-4. In the 10:15 affair, Mutton's Shell and Spencer's Real Estate settled for a 3 3 draw as the 1973-74 campaign got underway. "Woody" Lee, with two goals and John Adams and Larry Devitt with singles, supported Burns' explosive first game display. For Walter Franks, Barry Oliver, Bob Hellam, Rick Woolner and Greg Adams connected. The losers drew three of the game's four minor penalties, none figuring in the scoring. Brooks led 2-0 after one period and extended the margin to 4 1 following 40 minutes. They held a 4-3 edge after a hectic, third period that saw both teams open up. Both of Lee's goals for Brooks were unassisted efforts. Burns (Steve), bagged 20 goals in his 14 league matches last year and appears to be taking dead aim at another scoring title once more. Lanny Burns had a pair of assists, as did Larry Devitt (for a three point debut in Commercial play). Gary Wilson, last year's runner-up in the frantic scoring chase (27 points to Burns' 31), collected three assists for the Real Estate bunch. In the late contest, Mutton's Shell moved in front 3-1 only to see Spencers stage a third period revival for a 3 3 tie. The Real Estate crew were tagged with four of the game's five penalties. After just 45 seconds of the final period, Spencers' captain and last year's M.V.P. in the playoffs, counted again. Perris had a hand in the equalizer by Doug Crough, coming at 2:20. The to clubs displayed some fine hockey for the rest of the route, but netminders Grant Wright (Spencers) and Muttons' Curt Vanstone were unbeatable. The 1973-74 season, an 18-game affair, as usual, bas all fourclubs in the playoffs. There are 10 rookies perform- ing in the Commercial League this season. Preston's Atoms Seat Cobourg 5-2 Preston the Mover Major Atoms chalked up an exhibi- tion win over Cobourg on home ice by a 5-2 count Saturday afternoon. Timmy Almond in second period play, recorded his first goal of the early season assisted bny linemates Doug Dilling and Grant Brock.
