McNab, Ontario's Deputy-Minister' of Transportation and Communication, who was in Oshawa last week to speak to p6liticians, transportation representatives and the press from this area. McNab is heading up the provincial study group which wîll make recommenda-tions on January lst to the government regarding the creation of a Regional Transportation Authority for the new Durham Region as well as for Toronto a nd the other, nwyfre Regional Governments. He suggested that th e solution- to the transportation problems for Toronto and its "'commuter-shed" lies in "a. balanced system" of public transit and private vehicles. "The elimination of unnecessary auto. trips is essential,"'. he said. "We must provide an adeq uate and attractive alternative in public transit." H1e added, optimistically, tha t "the GO transit system justifies the contention that people are not wedded to their cars." As far as highways1 are concerned, McNab indicated that the province has plans to widen Highway 401 as far as Highway 115-35 (including new interchanges at Oshawa) and that the proposed route of Highway 407 ýshould be announced in three to four months.
