Provincial ( Nov. 27,1973 Judge R. B. Baxter presided with Acting Crown Attorney H. MacDonald and duty coun- sel D. Barber. Carlos Roy Smith, Newton- ville, was stopped on King St. E. Bowmanville, October 7. He was observed by Const. Ricard to swerve his car toward the cruiser, then it went over the centre of the road. John Arthur Needham, 36, 750 Lexington St. Oshawa, pleaded "guilty" to two char- ges October 5th, one of driving while disqualified contrary to section 238 of the Criminal Code and the other charge of driving while ability was impaired. Const. Martin re- ported he was eastbound on county road 1 and saw a pick up truck stop at intersection of county road 57. Mr. Need- ham's speech was slurred and an odor of alcohol on his breath. Tests were .16 and .15. Counsel asked for robation to assist Mr. Needham. The crown stated 'he had license sus ensions in May, August an September 1973. This man is a menace and not capable of driving on a highway. It has to be brought to his attention what he is doing and as a deterrent to others, I ask for a jail term." Judge Baxter stated "he had a responsibility to society to which he must give effect and I cannot do so by granting a suspended sentence. On the first charge he was sent to jail for 30 days and at the expiration he will enter into a probation order for 2 years, to report to a probation officer once a month and to continue psychiatric treatment until it is indicated it is no longer necessary. If you fail to report to the officer that is a violation." On the second charge he was given a further 30 days to run consec- utive. Jos. Harper, 206 Simpson Ave., Bowmanville, charged with assaulting Const. Brom- ley in September, was put on probation for 2 years, to report to officer once a month and to talk with the probation officer when you need to. Lunch was provid- ed by Mrs. A. Foster and our hostess Mrs. Manders. There was a good crowd at the Tupperware Party held on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Eddie Carscadden, which proved very successful for the hostess. On Wednesday evening, Mr. Maurice Bradley, showed his pictures in Kendal School Auditorium to the Brownies, Girl Guides and some of the mothers. The pictures were very interesting on animal life in Africa and a Snake Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Elliott of Willowdale and Mrs. Irene Richardson of Peterborough spent Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. R. Elliott. Thursday guests with Mr. and Mrs. Garland Cathcart were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Aikens of Pontypool and Mrs. Gertrude Carpenter of Gan- anoque.
