George Werry (a native of Solina) was a special kind of citizen. lHe liked the simple way of life. His makeup was without sham or pretence. Hie didn't seek the limelight, but it was inevitable that a man of his temperament and ability would often' rise to the top of his chosen fields of activity, which were diversified. It was one of his strong characteristics that he liked to get involved in community affairs in a meaningful way; no fence-sitter, he was often quick to volunteer his services when there was a tough job to be done, especially one requiring self-sacrifice and dedication to duty. With his special talent for organiza- tion - plus his innate ability to get along well with people from al walks of life- he was often in demand. There were several useful and varied sides to his personal make- up; usually he could be found at the centre of things where the action was. This was true in the service club world (he was an immediate past-president of The Oshawa Kiwa- nis Club); or in the education (where he was the 1957 chairman of the S. George Werry defunct Oshawa Board of Educa- tion); or the Masonic (as a member of the Scottish-Rite Lodge of Perfection and former Master of Lebanon Lodge AF and AM). Hie practised dentistry here for 27 years. No man revered his family ties more than the doctor. Hie was one of the prime organizers for the unique Werry Family picnic last July 21-22 at Blackstock when more than 500 members of the clan showed up for the lOOth anniversary gathering (many from distant parts of the continent). Dr. Werry was a gentie and kind man who tried to make Oshawa a' better place in which to live. Death - no respector of person - called him last Sunday, Dec. 9th. liundreds of city and district residents were shocked to learn of his sudden passing in hospital. It doesn't seem possible that, at 59, he is no longer amongst us. lie was truly "a top, citizen," as one mourner said Tuesday. Hie certainly lived up to the Kiwanis credo: "Share your life and give of yourself." _Oshawa Times Senior C*itizens Club Holds Final Meeting for 1973 with Enj'oyable-ý Christmas Party On December il a group of 154 Sr. Citizens sat down for their Christmas dnner and final pogram for 1973 at the Lions Centre. The room had been gaily decorated by the Tyrone E xplorers and a U.C.W. group under the lead- ership of Mrs. Woodley, Ty- rone, had supplied a lovey turkey supper. The meeting opened with "O Canada" and grace, with Mr. Gaham at the piano. At the head table were Mr. and Mms.' Woolley, Mr. and Mrs. C. Taylor, Mrs. Armistead, Mrs. Darch, Mrs. Cawker, Mr. Fanning, Mrs. Young, and Mr. and Mms. Lang. Mrs. Young read the minu- tes of the last meeting and Mms. Armistead the treas- urer's report.. Mrs. Young gave an outline of what happened in 1973 mentioning the tri s to Tweed, Kingston and co ored leaves tour in the autumn by the Kinsmen and Kinettes.
