Plans were made for a luncheon party and an evening was planned for entertaining the Sunday School teachers. Our deepest sympathy to Mr. Thomas Lennard and family on the loss of a dear wife and mother, Mrs. Eliza- beth Lennard who passed away in Bowmanville Memor- ial Hospital, Friday, April 5th. Thirty-eight members of the Newcastle Senior Citizens were royally entertained by their sister club at Orono last Thursday, April 4. A lovely evening of cards and fellow- ship was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Gar- rod Jr. and Shawn, accompan- ied by Mrs. Garrod's mother, Mrs. Rae Friedlander of Toronto, returned to the village last weekend from a delightful one week of basking in the sun at Acapulco, Mexito. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Couch accompanied Wallace's par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Couch, to Toronto on Sunda where they spent the day wit the senior Mrs. Couch's sister HELP! WE NEED TRADE-INS! Newcastle Community Bowling Lanes All bowling leagues finished bowling for the season the playoffs began. The winning team on Friday was the "Alleycats" - Anne Vogels, Gwen Hughes, Gladys Henry, Liz Willems, Don Sanders and merril Henry. The top Ladies team was the "Wildcats" - Donna Forth, Doreen Neal, Dorothy Turan- sky, Helen Couroux, Dorothy Mercer and Shirley Foster. In the Men's League the "Wildcats" held top place - Gord Cowling, Bill Farrow, John Ogden,' Ron Sutcliffe, Harry Clark and Merril Henry. In the Thursday Mixed League the "Brats" took top place bv three points - Bob Glanville, Fae Lewis, Brian Forget, Susanne Hall, Shirley Dunlop and Violet Dunlop. Youth Bowling League. Top Junior team - "Tigercats" - Kim Gilmer, Jeffrey Welter, Steven and Murray Stauffer. Top Senior team - "Zombies" - Joe Forget, Jeff Carr, Tim Nicholson and Steven Whyte. O.M.H.A. Novice Hockey Saturday, March 30, the Newcastle O.M.H.A. Novice played the final game of their 1973-74 hockey season. They competed in a tourna- ment in Cobourg, going to the final game before being elim- inated. The first game they won was against Stirling with New- castle on the top of a 5-4 score. Two goals each were scored by Brad Kelly and Dayrell Rowe with Darcy Huber netting one. Assists went to Ken Gilmer 2 and Kyrk Innis, Brad Kelly and Tim Kidd one each. Photo by Bill Arnott In the second game they eliminated West Rouge by a score of 9-2. Brad Kelly and Dayrell Rowe went on a scoring binge with Brad getting 4 and Dayrell getting 3 with singles scored by Kyrk Innis and Darcy Huber. As- sists were given to Kyrk Innis 3, Dayrell Rowe 2 and one each to Ken Gilmer and Timmy Kidd. The third game saw them bow to Lakefield 4 to 1 with Bracd Kelly scoring once more on a pass from Kyrk Irinis. Over the entire season these boys played a total of 52 games, wnning 35, tieing two and losing 15. Scoring leaders were Dayrell Rowe, Brad Kelly, Darcy Huber and Kyrk Innis. The defence was hand- led by paul Woodbeck, Timmy Kidd, Ken Gilmer and Danny Posek with Gary Martin taking care of the goal tendmig. Figure Skating Carnival Outstanding Success On Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, March 30 and 31, the Newcastle Arena was transformed into a spark- ling, glistening, ice palace. Mr. Jim Beam was the Master of Ceremonies. The first half of the pro- gramme; put on by the Junior members of the club, took us on a-worthwhile visit to "Old MacDonald's Farm". First of all appeared three roosters - Raymond Massie, Michael Knelangen, Jimmy Beam and on chicken - Lisa Holdaway. Four adorable blue bunnies - Carol Dawson, Michelle Ped- well, Merridy Stephenson, Vanessa Mackie followed, bringing with them, three black lams, Leslie Gibson, Susan Gibson and Beth Simp- son. Stan Tisnovsky entertained the spectators with a solo performance. Stanley is a strong skater and quite ac- complished for his young years. Stan was followed by a .OHN F. Jeff Payne, who won a gold medal in competition this season, performed an extrem- ly strong solo of jumps, spins and skating. Janet Pruner, Michelle Tuf- tord, Wendy Couch, Lana Collier, Lori Rogerson, Beth Bowler and Sally Simpson, were beautiful blue and purple delphiniums. The next number was a superb solo performance by Shelly Brown. Bright orange and yellow Marigolds appeared on the scene next. They were Shawna Kelly, Kathy Jacques, Joy Wind, Lisa Pótter and Beverly Henderson. The next senior skater to perform was Nancy Tisnov- sky. No farm can be represented fairly without the appearance of a Frog - Jeff Lake, Pumpkins - Ron Glasbergen, 'Todd Petherick, Steve Thax- ter, or Green and Yellow Beans Greg Nugent, Todd Pedwell and Stuart Irwin. And, of course, it takes farm hands to tend Old MacDon- ald's Farm and ours were - Freddie Millson, Gordon Simpson and Danny Simpson. Milkmaids were Kim Irwin, Sherry Stapleton, Debbie Cane, Lisa Wind, Joy Ritchie, Bonnie Irwin, Bonnie Staple- ton and Faye Jose. Strawberies took the spot- light next - Rhonda Bentley, Sherry Thakter, Deanna Hy- koski, Sherry Lyn McInnes, Lori Rowe, Denise Couvier, Cheryl Casselman, Michelle White, Kelly Randall and Joanne Lake. A very special strawberry was Lori Tisnov- sky who skated a solo. Mice appearing next on the programme were harmless. Our mice were Kimberley Hester, Michelle Hope, Pat- ricia Verbeek, Kelly Taylor, Patti Taelling, Sherri Wilson, Tammy Strachan, Angela Johnson, Patricia Irwin and Janet Irwin. On Sunday only the guest skaters, Barbara Underhill, aged 11, and Jim Sorochan, aged 12, of the Oshawa Skating Club, skated two numbers. The Junior Finale brought all the above mentioned ska- ters into the spotlight. After a shor intermission the senior skaters took to the ice taking the audience on an imaginative tour of the "Coun- tries of the World". Hungarian Girls were the first on the scene complete in native costume. Our Hungar- ian girls were Brenda Knelan- gen, Julie Payne, Nancy Payne, Nancy Tisnovsky and Penny Webster. Collette Pickering, another accomplished senior skater, presented her talents in an excellent solo effort. Our neighbours to the south, U.S.A., were well represented by Fiona Burrows, Wendy Johnson, Shelly Payne, Susan Foster, Darlene Lesnick and Lyn Tennant. Julie Payne was the next soloist and skated a delightful number to the pleasure of all present. Scotland was represented by Joanne Kent, Lisa Allin, Shelly Pickering and Lori Tisnovsky. Nancy Payne appeared in the spotlight and presented a strong, yet graceful solo number. The Finian Four, Susan Wagar, Shelly Brown, Collette Pickering and Jeanette Wa- gar, took the audience to Ireland. The next solo was a well- executed, graceful effort by Penny Webster. The guest skters, Barbara Underhill and Jim Sorochan. made their second appear- ance on Sunday at this time. Four young Harem Men, Jeff Payne, Dave Knapp, Lance Payne and Stanley Tisnovsky represented the country of Arabia. Brenda Knelangen next per- formed a solo. Can Can girls from France were Shelly Brown, Penny Webster, Janice Knapp, Nan- cy Tisnovsky, Shelly Farrow and Collette Pickering. Craig Tennant was the next soloist. Spain and the Tarentella was ably skated by Susan Wagar, Brenda Knelangen, Jenny Green, Jeanette Wagar, Julie Payne and Nancy Payne. The pros of the Newcastle Club, Miss Jamie Dawn Sut- ton, assistant pro, and pro, Miss Barbara Ann Gustar, presented a very energetic number. The final number on the programme before the senior KEN Miss C. W. Stewart, Mrs. Garland Cathcart and Mrs. R. Elliott attended the annual meeting of the Oshawa Pres- byterial held in Northminster United Church in Oshawa on Wednesday April 3rd. The guest speaker for the day was Dr. George M. Morrison, secretary of General Council, who spoke on Servants of Christ'. The April meeting of the Kendal U.C.W. was held Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. G. Catbcart. The president Mrs. Allen Downes opened the meeting with the finale was "Canada" perform- ed by all senior club members. This was a precision number and excellently executed by the senior girls. The senior finale brought all the aboe skaters out into the spotlight. DA L hymn 'There is a Green Field Far Away' followed by pray- er. The theme of the meeting was on Easter with each member present participating in reading parts of the program. A date was set in June for the Salad Supper at the Church. Lunch was pro- vided by Mrs. A. Downes and Mrs. Cathcart. The May meeting is to be held at the home of Miss C. W. Stewart. There was a good turn out Friday evening at the Euchre party in the Orange Hall. The lady's high went to Mrs. Pearl Clark and lady's low to Mrs. Jean Jillison. Gents' high was won by Reg Elliott and gent's ow went to Bill Morley. The 50-50 draw was won by Tom Wilson. Mrs. Ralph Geach is in Bowmanville Hospital where she underwent surgery last week. Mrs. Art Low went to Toronto last Thursday to spend a couple of weeks with her mother Mrs. C. Robertson, while her sister and her husband are on a trip to Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Boyd of Toronto spent Wednesday with Helen and Fred Boyd also Mr, and Mrs. Roy Patton called on them on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hoy entertained Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wood and family, Thursday evening, for supper The occasion, being Mr< Wood's birthday. Mrs. Julia Jackson is home from hospital and feeling much better. She plans to go to California for Easter. Mr. Ralph Hills of Ennis- killen who is attending uni- versity in Kingston took the service Sunday morning.
