Mr. Ted White was in charge of the first part of the service. Mr, Ken Brooks gave out pins and certificates to several pupils who had attained al- most perfect attendance dur- ing the past season. After the S.S. retired to their various classes, Rev. David Harris, B.Th. gave a short sermon and then the congre- gation and Sunday School teachers and pupils gathered at the north side of the Christian Education Hall and Church, where a Colorado Blue Spruce tree, donated by the Sunday School, had been recently planted. This tree was dedicated by Rev. Harris in memory of the late Mr. Harry Freeman who was S.S. Superintendent from 1925 - 1972. Mrs. L. C. Snowden paid tribute td Mr. Freeman when she said that Harry had attendedMaple grove Church and S.S. for sixty years and quote - "while this generation and future generations may have new ideas and possibly better ideas for Church and Sunday School, no Christian service can replace Harry's qualities on honesty, sincerity and faithfulness, and when ill health forced him to give up this work, a large part of his life was gone." Arthur Barnes celebrated their thirty-fifth wedding anniver- sary at a family dinner hosted by their son, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Barnes. and daughter, Miss Grace Barnes. Mr. and Mrs. Grace Barnes. After toasting the health of the bride and groom, everyone enjoyed a salad supper. Earlier in the day Mr. and Mrs. Weir had hosted a luncheon party in honor of the occasion, and Miss Grace Wilson, Oshawa, had called to offer congratulations. Course she is taking with Sir Sanford Flemming in Peter- borough. Miss Adele Page has also enrolled in Sir Sanford Flem- ing this term. Yelverton United Church celebrated its 112th Anniver- sary on Sunday with the Rev. Wm. John of Lindsay as guest speaker. Special music was supplied by Miss Pamela Stinson and Mrs. Bill Gilmour who provided two lovely duets assisted on the electric organ by Mrs. Ralph Pfoh. Over the weekend the Yel- verton Sr. girls participated in a ball tournament near Lind- say. They lost the first game by a close score 7-5 to Cambray but won the second vs Little Britain by a large score thus winning the conso lationtrophy of $25.00. The Sr. girls won their game vs Millbrook this week and need one more win to take the trophy. The Jr. girls lost their game vs Blackstock on Friday at Blackstock but won the one at home earlier in the week. The finals now stand two wins and one tie for Yelverton; one win and one tie for Blackstock. The Yelverton-Janetville Mens team took a new lease on life on Sunday as they won over Nestleton by a score of 8-3. Donnie Timms was the winning pitcher pitching the full game. The Panchuk brothers pitched for Nestle- ton. There were no particular stars as all players played well. Terry Malcolm and Trevor Nesbitt each had three baggers; Clare Robinson and Donnie Timms had four for five and three for four hits respectively. The semi-finals will be decided next Sunday at Nestleton at 2 p.m. A small family gathering was held on Sunday evening at Malconia in observance of No. One son's (Marti) 19th birth- day. On Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Staples were honored with a farewell party by the joint Lifford and Yelverton communities. The earlier part of the evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Gary Bristow and Warren Sutcliffe. Mr. Charlie McGill was the M.C. for the occasion and Mrs. Barbara Hamilton read a poetic address elaborating on the prominent position Law- rence and Vera have taken in our communities and how badly they will be missed in the future. The Staples moved recently to their new home in Orono. They were presented with a reclining rocker chair, a coffee table and a sum of money by the committee on behalf of their many friends. Lunch concluded this social evening. The committee included Mrs. Barbara Hamilton, the Ted Spenceleys, the Bruce McGills, the Charlie McGills, the Norman Wilsons, the Lloyd Cains and the Jack Wilsons. Whillans, and the ushers Messrs. Tony Whillans, Sam- my Bonura, Victor Salomone, and Joseph Guihiana, Master Terrence Rigby acted as ring- bearer. Receiving the guests at the reception held in the Lion's Centre, the bride's mother wore a formai gown of shocking pink chiffon, witb a corsage o f whbit e g ardenia and pink Sweetheart roses, while the groom's mother choose a formal gown of navy print with white and a white gardenia corsage with Yellow Sweetheart roses. Leaving on a honeymoon to Italy and Sicily, the bride and groom wore matching beige suits with vests, the bride also wearing a wide brimmed white hat and a corsage of white gardenia and red Sweet- heart roses. CORA DEAN Funeral services were held Saturday September 7 for Mrs. Cora I. Dean. Mrs. Dean passed away at Bowmanville Hospital on Wednesday, Sept- ember 4th after a short illness. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Clark, she was born and educated in Port Perry. In 1915 she married Charles Russell Dean and resided in Oshawa and the Burketon area. A member of the United Church, Mrs. Dean belonged to both the Courtice Women's Auxiliary and the Burketon Women's Auxiliary. Mrs. Dean is survived b her husband Charles Russeil Dean and two daughters, Mrs. Doris Garrow of Midland and Mrs. Gwen McKee of Taunton Road. Three sons Bert, Art and George predeceased their mother. Captain Hewlett of the Salvation Army, Bowman- ville, officiated at the service. Grandsons David Garrow, Abbe Cordon, Tom Dean, Lloyd Hanna, Rick McKee and Glenn Dean served as pall- bearers. The body rested at Northcutt and Elliott Funeral Home and interment was St. John's Cemetery, Blackstock.
