6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 30, 1974 Section Two OPP Report The Newcastle Detqchment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated the follow- ing motor vehicle collisions and occurrences during the period October 8th, 1974 to October 14th, 1974. Thirty-one motor vehicle collisions were investigated in which 48 persons were injured and two persons were killed. As a result of these collisions 13 persons have been charged with offences under the High- way Traffic Act and one person has been charged with a driving offence under the Criminal Code The Newcastle officers also investigated 113 occurrences of a general nature. Some of these occurrences are as follows: There were seven investigations into "Theft" offences, five investigations into "Break and Enter" offen- ces, three investigations into complaints of "Wilful Da- mage" and one investigation into the offence of "Rape'. Other activities included in- vestigations into reports of missing persons, found pro- perties, trespassers and erra- tic drivers. Five persons have been charged with offences under the Liquor Control Act, five persons have been charged with offences under the Crimi- nal Code and five persons have been charged with driv- ing offences under the Crimi- nal Code. The following are brief reports of two fatal motor vehicle accidents. On Monday, October 14th, 1974, at 4:20, a fatal motor vehicle accident occurred on Highway 35, approximately 1.5 miles south of the Highway 35-115 junction, when two cars collided in the northbound lane. Dead is the passenger of one of these cars; Esther Alice Piehl, 19 years of age, of 1475 Phillips Street, Fort Erie, Ontario. A second fatal motor vehicle accident occurred on Monday, October 14th, 1974; ai 5:15 on Highway 35 at County Road 14. A vehicle which was south- bound on Highway 35; was in collision with a second vehicle which had been eastbound on County Road 14. Dead is the driver of the eastbound vehicle, which had been eastbound on County Road 14; Darrel House, 19 years, of L. 21, C. 8, Mariposa Township,, RR. 2, Oakwood, Ontario. "Crime Prevention for Cottagers" Thanksgiving weekend and shortly thereafter are the times of the year when most people close their cottages for the winter. The Community Services Branch of the Ontar- io Provincial Police would like to remind you of a few security questions that could help prevent your cottage from being broken into during the winter months. 1. Have you removed as many of your prtab vuables as possible? 2. Could you positiveiy identi- fy your property by some type of identifiable mark? 3. Are the windows and doors secured preferably co- vered with shutters or some other solid material? 4. Have you checked your locking devices, are they of good quality, in good repair and properly installed? 5. Are you going to-check your cottage during the winter? If your cottage appears to be broken into, don't touch move or wander about the scene, this only destroys evidence needed by the Police to apprehend the cul- prit 6. Haveyou formed a cottage association, a close rela- tionship with a neighbour and arranged to check each other's property when in the area? 7. No cottage can be com- pletely burglar-proof. Ten motor vehicle collisions were investigated in which two persons were injured and one person was killed.
