Jeffery, a civil engineering graduate of the University of Toronto, joined Goodyear in 1934 making V-beits at Bow- manville. During his 40 years with the company, the last 38 in development of power- transmission products, Jeff- ery says the iggest change came with the advent of polyester. "This fibre was just made for industrial rubber products," hie said. The big problems with V-belts, hie said, were in the west. ilWe p ut a belt on a combine and many times the thing broke before the mach- in e got into the field." New fabrics and cornpounds event- ually overcame the problem, but, even today, Jeffery says, V-belts get a hard ride from combines. "Just when we got a belt strong enough to handle a certain system, they either condensed the size of t he drive unit or went for a more powerful motor. We were alwayson the hot spot." V-belt development in Can- ada didn't necessarily parallel that in the U.S., Jeffery explained. "If either of us had problems. we'd consit the other to avoid duplication, but V-belts in Canada were made for diflerent climatic condi- tions and different uses than those in the US." As chief engineer of power transmission products, J.eff- ery was largely reponsible for solving the-problems, and for his ability to do this hie was dubbed, "Mr. V-belt." He does flot yearn for the dav oftherayon-reinforced belt. "W~estore the beits and when we went to get them,ý they'd be a different length." Jeffery bas also served his community. He has been president and secretary of the Bowmanville Men's Canadian Club and vice-president of the localLion's Club as well as being chairman of the club's committee for sensory con- cerns. He has also served on the Bowmanville public school' board as a member 'and chairman. He is a member of Trinity United Church and has served on the board of gover- ngrs. on ANOTHER IMPORTANT CONSUMER SERVICE OFFER AT A&F PIE D E WATCH FOR "OUR BUTCHER'S PLEDGE" SEAL.
