They have been taking place, courtesy of Charterways, on Sunday evenings during the Junior C games here, but at the moment hockey- fans- apparently are too busy with Christmas shopping. Last week. the winners of tickets to the WHA Toros game, Mr. and, Mrs. Mel Sleep, had the whole bus to themselves and that's no .way for Charterways to make money. CENTRE, Just aFew of the Trophy Winners in1 Legion Golf League A coupl e of weeks ago, The Statesmnan photographer dropped in on the annual Legion Golf'League banquet at the Queen Street hall, to obtain pictures of the trophy winners. After a brief wai they began to gather until the above group, complete with awards, was ail lined up. Somebody was supposed to bring in A list of the winniers but must have f orgotten. Anyway, here are some of the top golfers. What a league! Looks very much as though most of those who played won trophies. We haven't any namnes, but they'l1 be able to recognize thernselves. Gerald Brunt scored th 'bt Lrc"in this game. Railphi C-ryderman added a pair and singles were scored by John Conboy, Terry Sarginsoni, Rick Scott and John Hogarth. Assists were credited tu Kirk Kemp with tbree, Dan 'Cox witb two and singles going to Nick Van Seggelen, Brunt, Conhoy and Hogarth. Mon., Dec. 2nd in Oshawa, Bowmanville carne ou t on top by a 3-1 count over the Oshaw4a Reds. In this contest Bowman- ville 'played a strong garne from start to finish. Their f irst goal was by Kirk Kemp unassisted. The second by Cryderman frorn Conboy and Brian Simhpson. Brunt comple- ted the scoring for Bowman- ville being set up by Kemp. Back in Bowmanville on Wed., Dec. 4th, the Sports started off slowly, falling behind 2-0 to Whitby midway through the second period but notchied one bel ore the end of the second to g et back in the gaine. They played a strong third period and outscored Whitby by 3-0 for a 4-2 victory. Bowmanville's fourth goal was scored into the empty net with 15 sec. remaining in the game. Conboy scored irst in Bow- mnanville's comieback, being set up by Simnpson. Cox from Cryderman tied the score. Van Seggelen on a lightning blast from just inside thbe blue line, scored the winner and Crydeîrman shot therpck into the eînpty net for te insur- ance rnarkey in the dying seconds. Jim Hutton set up the goal. This was an exhibition game played in Newcastle Arena. Bowmanville scored early in this gaine and stayed ahead tbroughout the contest. Their team spirit was a determining tactor in their victory. Ted Puk, who just joined the team, scored two goals with singles gqigto Cox, Sarginson, Kepand John Cornish. Gerald Brunt earned two assists with Conboy, Smpson, Van Seggelen and Kemp gaining one apiece. On Sunday, Dec. 8th, the team visited Cobourg for a league game and skated off with an 8-3 win. They had little trouble defeating Cobourg who beat tbem the last time they met. Dan Cox led in the scoring department with 3 goals. Cryderman with 2; Van Seggelen, Cornish and Puk, with one each, complted the scoring. Conboy p ayed an important role as lhe set up four goals. Single assists were credited to Hutton, Cryder- man, Van Seggelen, Cox, Sarginson and Scott. Len Chappeil and Ted Tru- deau played well in the nets as they shared goaltending dut- les in thesep ast: five games. Also, the defence (Scott, Sim pson, Hutton and Ho- garth) have been an asset to the team blocking numerous shots that could have been potential goals. Next home game for the Midgets is Sat., Dec. l4th at 8:30 p.m. Bay Ridges' w'ill be making their second and final visit to Bowmanville. __ Jay Sweet Scores Twilceý To HeIp Mary Brown's Defeat Stouffville ý4 tO i 1On Saturday, Dec. 7, Mary Brown's Toros played host to Stouffville and beat the visit- ing team 4-1. In the first perioý, Jay Sweet opened the scoring for Bowmariville at the 5:25 mark whien he was set up by Chuck Nash who dug the puck out of the corner boards and, spotted Jay Sweet in front of t he net ail alone, Jay had no trouble finding the target. One minute later, Mike Anderson scored the only goal for the visiting team on a bad clearing pass in the Toros end. In the second period the Toros went ahead to stay when Ray Cummings fed a pass over to Bobby Canfield on left wing and Bobby fired a quick shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net catching the goalie the wrong way.' With less than five seconds remainlng in a penalty to Stouffville, Ray Cummings finally scored the insurance goal with Scott Masters and Bobby Canfield assisting. In the third period Jay Sweet scored his f if th goal in six games as a Toro with the assist going to Fred Lichacz and Chris Michelson. Dane Hupa, Greg Smith and Glen Owens have really skat- ed into form as they continue to become a strong checking line both offensively and defensively and it won't be much longer before they put that red light on again.
