6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmn;nville, January 8, 1975 Section Two New Posfmaster Takes Over Here Minister Issues Warning, About Phouey Charities John T. Clement, Ontario's Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations, last week drew attention to the problem of phoney charities. "It's easy to take advantage of peoples' generosity at this time of yean, an althougb most onganizations do a lot of f ood at Christmas, there are a ew that are strictly rackets", he said. Mr. Clement said that one scheme involves phoning at random to solicit money for charity Christmas parties. "The money is supposed to belp make Cbistmas a littie happier for orpbans and crippled children, but what often happens is that the onganizer turns out to be a con man who keeps most of the money for himrself." There are several ways the public can belp stop this sort of ripoff, Mr. Clement said. "First,gv only to establisb- ed chanities, sucb. as your own church or local service organ- izations. Second, only give officiai tax receipts. Wben you get a receipt, you not only save money at tax time, but you also have proof tbat you are giving to a worthv and effective cause. I thixik the public should also be aware that this sort of telephone solicitation is not used by neputable chanities at ahl". Mr. lement noted that service organizations and othen groups wbo want to raise money for legitimate chanit- able purposes should take a close look a t fund-raisers wbo offer thein services. "Too of ten, a very worthy group can Set a 'black eye' y unwitting- ylending its name to a shoddy operator who naîses a lot of mnoney but keeps most of it", Mr. Clement said.
