The Bowmanville team will also play their first game of the O.B.A., play-downs against Gananoque in February. FLASHBACK -10 YEARS AGO - Doris Joll, of the Ladies Major team at Liberty Bowl, rolled a terrific 915 on Monday night, with games of 261, 268 and 386. DUPLICATE BRIDGE - Winners at the January 15th game at the Lion's Centre were: N-S - (1) Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Nind, (2) Mrs. John Geboers and Mr. Bob Gill. WRIGLEY MIDGET - hockey tournament goes all this week at Civic Auditorium, Osh- awa, from Monday through to the final game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Teams are entered from Nova Scotia, British Columbia, New Brunswick Newfoundland, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Mani- toba, Thunder Bay, Maritime, Ottawa, Alberta, Quebec and Oshawa. BADMINTON CLINICS - the culmination of the 1975 National Test Program for Badminton, will take place, when Olich Solihin, of Indonesia, the Canadian National Coach, tours across Canada, conducting clinics for young players who have successfully completed the five necessary tests involved. Sponsored by the O'Keefe Sports Foundation, he will be in Toronto on April 27, and in Ottawa on the 28th. CANCELLED - It is with regret, we announce the cancellation of the Can-Am Series held annually at Mosport. However, the Formula 5,000 series will be held and the UOP Shadow Racing Team will provide an interesting season. THE CHARITY ICE RACE - in Bewdley on Sunday, February 2nd at noon, by the Oshawa Competition Motorcycle Club will provide a great afternoon's fun for spectators, and also help finance the Bewdley Community Centre Building Fund. GO LEAFS GO! - How about those Toronto Maple Leafs knocking off Montreal Canadiens last weekend to put a stop to their 21-game winning streak. Maybe, with their new muscle and some encouragement instead of criticism, they'll be on their way up. THREE EXHIBITIONS - Knapp's Towing Major Bantams played three exhibitions in the past week, defeating Oshawa's Minor Bantams 5-3 and lost to the "AAA" Oshawa Kinsmen Bantams in a close 2-0 game. They also took on the "AAA" Silver Stick reps'. Bramalea, and played to a 3-3 tie. The league leading Oakville team of the Golden Horseshoe Circuit will be the opposition on Young Canada Day at 4:00 p.m. NO PLAYERS, NO BALL - Locke's TV Electrons Intermediate ball club executive were elected at the first meeting Jan. 19. Frank's Malor Peewees, Win 'B' Category Crown in Hockey Playing a heavy schedule on the weekend, W. Frank's Major Peewees came out on top again, starting with a league game in Bay Ridges on, Thursday against t e top team in the lakeshore league. In a very tight, checking game throug hout, Rick Simpson scored unassisted in the sec- ond period for Toros' only goal. Kyle Shore scored for Bay Ridges in the third ending the game at a 1-1 tie. Making many fine saves in the nets for Bowmanville was Paul La- vigne. Travelling to Delhi on Fri- day to la in the "Tobacco Town"hockey tournament we opened up against Napanee on Friday night. in a scoreless two perîods of hockey, Bow- manville outplayed the oppos- ition and outshot them 13-2. One of the Napanee shots was a penalty shot which Mark Shackelton handled perfectly. Napanee came back with two goals in the third period. Tournament at Delhi Frank's got their only goal with six attackers on the ice with only 24 seconds remain- ing on a pass from Rick Simpson to, Brent Clemens who droveta hard shot, gettîng the score. Final was Napanee 2, Bowmanville 1. Playîng Milton on Sat. morning Rick Simpson opened the sconing with assists to Chuck Welsh and Kevîn Noble. Milton came right back and tied the score at 1-1. Ending the scoring in the first was Rick Simpson unassisted. Con- trolling the play in the second, Toros got three unanswered goals, the first going to Carl Chambers, assists to Brent Clemens and Rudy MacDon- aid. Our next goal was scored by Steve Brown fromn Rick SSmson. Getting our next g oal? and the hat trick was Rick Simpson assisted b Terry Riggers and Chuck Welsh. Opening the scoring in the third was Chuck Welsh assists to Rick Simpson and Stan Greenham. Milton got their second and final goal one minute later. We then had to wait for the results of Napanee playing Milton because if Napanee won we would have been out as they would have had four points and Bowmanville only two points. But Milton defeat- ed Napanee by 4-1 giving Milton two points also. We went to the final because we had scored in the two games a total of two more goals than Milton. Sunday we met Sharon in the "B" category champion- ship. We came out and played inspired hockey in the first and opened the scormg on a fine passing play with Rick Eagles Score Decisive Win Over Port The Red Eagie Junior C's chalked up a big win on Sunday night here when they piled on the coal and came up with a 5-2 victory over Port Perry Flamingos. Rory Gibbs and Doug Wood played a stellar role in the game, Gibbs scoring two goals and assisting on a third, whiie Wood assisted on four of the five counters for the Eagles. Body Knox, Don Smith and Mike Smith scoredathe other goals, with Gibbs and Wood assisting on Boyd Knox's goal, Perry Flamingos Glenn Rice and AI Emard battle all the way with many helping on Don Smith's and missed scoring chances by Knox and Wood lending a hand both teams, and plenty of on Mike Smith's. action. Sports Major Midgets Finish Second in Lakeshore Standing With a win and a loss in weekend games, Bowmanville Sports finish the season, two points out of first place. Ajax were the league champions. Bowmanville defeated Ajax 11-3, Sat., Jan. 18th, to come within two points of the leaders. This set up an opportunity for Bowmanville to end in first place but this was not to be as they lost to a fired up Lindsay team on Sun., Jan. l9th. Ajax's ast game of the season was in Bowman- ville on Saturday. Ajax and Bowmanville both ended the season with just four losses out of 22 games. However, Ajax had no tie games where as Bowmanville had two. In the game on Saturday, the play was fairly even and Ajax, oddly enough, out shot Bowmanville 39-32 but the difference was in the goal keeping. Lenny Chappell was sharp in the nets for Bowman- ville and allowed only three goals. Ajax was weak in goal as. eleven pucks entered the net. Ajax also tired in the third period and Bowmanville took advantage of this by scoring six unanswered goals. Ted Puk was the goalie's biggest enemy as hesscored five goals and assisted on another. Gerald Brunt also had a good game as he scored once and set up four more. Tenry Sanginson and Rick Scott scored a goal and added two assists each. Brian Simp- son had a goal and an assist, John Conboy and John Cornish each had a goal and Ralph Cryderman one assist. Ralph Cryderman and Jim In Lindsay on Sunday, Hutton each had an assist. Bowmanville Sports took a 3-0 lead in the first period and then let up a little. Lindsay replied with three power pla goals in the second and took over in the third with three more goals. Bowmanville scoredîate in the game for a final score of 6-4 in Lindsays favor. Kirk Kemp and Mark laVigne each scored a goal and set up another. Ted Puk and Dan Cox scored the other two goals. Nick Van Seggelen, Sharp Goaltending Mary Brown's Torc Two Big Wins on W On Saturday, Jan. 18 Mary Brown's Toros played host to Markham and beat the visit- ors by a score of 4-0. Ray Cummings opened the scoring in the first minute of play as he scored what roved to be the winner. C uck Welsh scored at 11:35 also in the first period as he was set up b Cummings and Bob Canfield. In the second period, Mark- ham really tested goaltender Wayne Bragg but Wayne came up with some excellent saves to help protect the Toros' lead. In the final period, the Toros scored twice more, once on a three way combination with Chuck Nash and Ray Cum- mings setting up teammate Bobby Canfield. The fourth goal was scored by Jay Sweet Preston's Major Atoms Win 1 Tie i The Preston the Mover Major Atoms played three league games last week, winning one, tying one and losing one. On Wednesday, the Toros travelled to Bay Ridges and defeated the home town club 3-0in a very well played game. There was no scoring until the middle period when John Klompmaker found the range assisted by Steve Cary and Darcy Cummings. Brian Ruddyscored a goal, assisted by is right-wnger Barry Cullen. In the final period, Ruddy scored his second goal, the assists going to Cummings and Cary. Ken Woodard was in goal for Bowmanville and came up with several key saves to earn a well deserved shut-out, the fourth time Bowmanville has held the Bay Ridges club scoreless. On Saturday, Bowmanville was host to Markham and the teams skated to a 1-1 draw. Markham struck for a goal in the second period to take the lead. and Lose i In the final period, Rod Plain evened the count with the play being set up by Joe Nihi*. Steve Skene was in goal and was verv steady to keep the Markham sharpshooters from increasing the score. On Sunday evening, the Brooklin Whitby Major Atoms handed the Toros a 5-3 beating. In the first stanza, both teams swapped goals, Joe Nihill being t he marksman on a nice play, assisted b Eddy Osborne and Bill Sainsbury. In the second period, again both squads traded goals, Mike Stocker scoring for Bowmanville, the assist going to Bill Hogarth., In the final period, Bow- manville came out fast, pick- ing up a goal, the sniper being Rod Plain, unassisted., At this point, the hosts took over scorng three unanswer- ed goals to pick up a well deserved victory. Ken Woodard was in goal for the Toros and didn't have much chance on the pucks that eluded him. Bowmanville play an exhi- bition game (toniglit) Jan. 22nd at 7: 00 p.m . at Bowman- ville Arena against Trenton. On Friday, Jan. 24th, they leave for Sarnia to compete in the International Silver Stick Tournament. Next Wednes- day, Jan. 29th, at 7:00 p.m. Bowmanville will be host to the Toronto Bluestin another exhibition contest. Watch the paper for play-off times and dates coming up in February. Before the final buzzer, the visitors went all out to break their shut out as they continued to pepper George Kennett but George proved to be too quick and, sharp as he stopped every- thing that was fired at him. The next day the Toros travelled to Ajax for the first encounter with this team and were able to return with a well earned 3-2 win. Once again George Kennett and Wayne Bragg proved to be excellent goaltenders as they were cailed upon to make some brilliant saves. Ajax opened the scoring in the first period at 6:45 only to have Scott Masters tie the score 1-1 two minutes later with assists going to Scott Heard. In the second period, Ajax drew first blood again as they scored af ter 44 seconds of play The Toros once again tied the score at 2-2 while Ajax were a man short. In the final period both clubs made some great end to end, rushes but the only goal scored was by the Toros. Scott Masters got the winning goal from BobbyCanfield. Greg Smith, Mike Gall, Dane Rupa and Andrew Smith played one of their best games for the ,Toros. Next game is in Bowman- ville at 12 noon. Whitby got their only goal of the game late in the opening period and led 1-0 going into th~e second. Before long, Tim Little tied it up by bangng the puck into the Whitby net with assists from Tim Preston and Jeff Logan. Jeff Vyfschaft gave the Toros the lead before the end of the second with a goal from Preston and Todd Beers. Beers and Vyfschaft assisted on Preston's goal midway through the final stanza to give Bowmanville its 3-1 win. Todd Stephens and Scott Bate, once again, played great hockey in the nets. They blocked a total of 12 shots, as Bowmanville managed 15 on the Whitby goalie. The Toros had three penalties and the visitors received two. Defeat Ajax The following day, the Toros travelled to Ajax and defeated the home team 6-2. Bowmanville started off quickly as Stephen Taylor scored from Todd Beers and Jeff Vyfschaft. Ajax fought back and tied the score at 1-1 shortly after. Jeff Vyfschaf t, who has been playg excel- lent hoc e lately, scored from Dan Cèoombes, and Tim Preston. Vyfschaft gave Bow- manville a 3-1 lead with a good hard wrist shot, assisted by Shaughn Houston. The second E eniod was all Tim Preston as e fired three goals. The first two were unassisted efforts and the third one was from Tim Little, whîle the Toros were shorthanded. Ajax got their second goal late in the final period to make the score 6-2.
