SEASON ENDS-the curtain rang down on Wednesday evening in the new Darlington Arena for the Bowmanville Red Eagles Junior C hockey team. There has to be understandable regrets, because, at the start of the season, we had a team loaded with talent, and high hopes of going all the way this season. However,. injuries, illness, suspensions, and dissensions, within the club, took their toll. Sometime, hope- fully, it will sink in that the team that stands together, through thick and thin, is the winner at the end. However, best wishes, and see you next season. ALL CANADIANS-will have an opportunity to test their driving skills on Sunday, March 2nd, when the Canandian Broadcasting Corporation presents a one hour program called the "Canadian Drivers' Test". Local listings should be checked for the time of the nationwide telecast, which is being produced and directed by Bill Bolt and hosted by Allan Miller. Multiple choice questions on correct driving procedures will be submitted to both the viewing public and a studio audience of 200. The studio audience response will be compared against two high-mileage professional drivers, one from Edmonton, Alta. and one from Moncton, N.B., and a university graduate from Toronto. CONGRATULATIONS-to the Cobourg Cougars, on winning the series against Bow- manville Red Eagles in the Jr. C opening round of playoffs and we wish them continued suc- cess. Also congratulations to Rory Gibbs, who won the high scoring ¡title in the six team league. Incidentally, Rory lias two more seasons of Jr. C'Hockey, and the local club will lose four players to ver-age, and one to schooling. WIN TWO GAMES-the afternoon Ladies Curling Section of Bowmanville 'ountry Club, sent two rinks to the Tankard Playlowns in Port Perry, last Monday, February 10th. The rinks skipped Ellen Orniston, with Lyla Huxtable, Shirley Stainton, Marj Hodgson, and Norma Gay, with Vivian Cowan, Aileen Osborne, and Dorothy Hartford. Bowmanville defeated Annandale in the first game, Oshawa Curling in the second game and were defeated in the third gane by Oshawa Golf, who went on to win the district playdowns. This is an excellent showing for th Bowmanville Club in advancing this far in the Tankard. KITE-FLYING-a new type of sport, catching on rapidly, claimed a victim on Saturday. Arthur Cresswell, 34, of Oshawa, fell 100 - 150 feet to the ice, when the kite he was flying, over ice-covered Lake Scugog, collapsed. He was killed instantly. DOUG WOODCOCK-of Whitby, now ranks eighth in the skiing circuit with total winnings of $5,300. Doug placed third in the giant Slalom race in the Benson and Hedges International circuit at University of Montreal on Saturday, winning $1,500. HIGH TRIPLE-for this schedule, in the Men's Major League, at Liberty Bowl goes to Bob Smith with a big triple of 910 (338-351-221). High single was 355. Convenor Presents Scoring Trophy to Rory Gibbs Last Wednesday, at the beginning of the playoff game between Bowmanville Red Eagles and Cobourg Cougars, League Convenor Lloyd Gilliam of Lindsay presented a special memorial trophy to the league's top scorer Rory Gibbs of the Eagles. The trophy was donated by Mr. Gilliam in memory of his wife who died last September. Taking part in the special ceremony were from left to right, Bob Colwell, president of the local hockey association, the winner Rory Gibbs and Mr. Gilliam. The large trophy at right will be for annual competition, the smaller one is for Mr. Gibbs to keep. Red Eagles Bow Out of Playoffs Cobourg Hands Them 7-4 Loss To Win Series Three Games to One The Red Eagle Junior C's have hung up their skates for this year after being ousted from the first round of the playoffs by a hungry Cobourg Cougar team 7-4 at a packed Darlington Sports Centre. The win gave Cobourg the series, three games to one. The Eagles got away to a dismal start, with the Cougars potting. three goals in rapid succession in the opening period. At this point, Randy Thiele in the Bowmanville net, decided it wasn't his night and coach George Cawker agreed. He was replaced by Bob Ouelette who stopped a pile of rubber but was beaten for four big goals. Ron Fowler in the Cobourg net was also not quite as sharp as he had been in the previous game that was a goaltenders' duel, but his defence held up well in protecting him. Top league scorer Rory Gibbs who was honored with a special trophy presentation at the start of the game for his achievement, again led the Eagles on the attack, but they put so much into their early efforts in overcoming that three-goal deficit that they just didn't have enough to last out the third period at full speed. It was 3-1 going into the second, Gibbs having scored his first at the 14:37 mark of the opener. He nailed his second at 1:06 of the second but raised hopes were dashed at 9:28 when Cougars counted on a long distant shot that went high into the right hand corner of the net behind Ouellette. Bruce Osborne put the Eagles back into the game at the 17:03 mark when Cougars were short-handed to end the period at 4-3. The Eagles came out like gangbusters in the third and their supporters went wild when John Wood picked up a pass from Bruce Osborne and shot it low into the corner for the typing goal. They looked as though they were on their way to win, but it was not to be. Cougars scored a short- handed goal at the 8:53 mark to take the lead and never looked back, scoring two more before the end of the contest to. hand the Eagles a 7-4 decisive loss. So, it's best wishes to the Cougars until next year. They started their series with Lindsay Muskies on Monday night. Brooks Down Muttons Spencers Blank Franks In Commercial Playoffs By B.L. Oliver This was the first game of the playoffs and saw Brook's and Spencer's go one-up in best-of-three series. In the first encounter, Brook's bested Mutton's 5-1. The "Big" man for Brook's was league scoring champion Rick Woolner, who paced the winners with three goals and an assist while linemate Ken Holmes picked up one goal and three assists. Brook's other tally was supplied by Brian Rowe. For a disorgan- ised Mutton's team, their lone chance to cheer came off the stick of Ray Rendell. Mutton's are not to be counted out as they are expected to prove to be a team to reckon with. The second game was a real cliff-hanger all the way with Spencer's emerging the event- ual 2-0 winners. Superb goal- tending by Mike Johnson kept Frank's off, the score sheet while Rick Shackelton and "Bucky" Hughes connected for a goal each. Checking was the name of the game as Spencer's refused to allow Frank's to get wound up. Grant Flintoff and John Vance were standouts as Grant's forechecking stopped many plays before they start- ed and John jolted anyone who penetrated into Spencer's end. These four teams seem very evenly matched and promise to provide some excellent edge of your seat" hockey. Plan to attend next Sunday as Frank's and Spencer's face-off at 10 a.m. and Mutton's and Brook's meet at 11:30 a.m. W. Barrie provided the opposi- tion for the local lads in the second game and squeezed out a 3-2 decision in the final two seconds. Af ter a scoreless first period, big Bill Wright blasted home his first goal of the year with a screamer from the blueline. Murray Ruddy and Jackey Pinch combined to set up Wright.
