Somewhere, a sheet of our news must have been misplaced, for we had a parsnip story which topped the record as far as we were concerned. Mrs. F. Cowlard, who resides with Mrs. P.F. LeGresley, reported that she had pulled a 58 inch parsnip. Mr. Reginald LeGresley had measured the vegetable and we wondered if this were a record, good enough for the World Book of Records - like Toronto's C.N.R. tower. While we are writing of records, Mrs. P.F. LeGresley will be one hundred years young this month of May. We are sorry to report the death of Mr. James Baden Powell, at Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville on Friday, May Mrs. Fred Byers visited with her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Misener, Toronto. While there, she attended the fiftieth anniversary service of ManorRond United Church. Two services were held to accommoda te ail the congre- gation and visitors. One minister, who prenched that Sunday had served the church for sixteen years there. Mrs. Olive Howson spent the week-end with her sister-in- law, Mrs. Fred Byers. Sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Mr. Roy Burley, Orono. Mr. George Kimball was a bearer at the funeral on Saturday, May 3. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stapleton, Orono, were Satur- day evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Kimball. After the wedding of Miss Dianne Kimball to Mr. Kenneth Birney on Friday evening, May 2, a lovely wedding reception was held at the bride's parents' home, Kimball Cove. About fifty guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. John Kimball. Among the attendants were Mr . nd Mrs. Dan Norton, Mr. and Mrs. Afred Graham, Mr. and Mrs. George Kimball and Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cooper, Oshawa.> On Tuesday, April 29, the Ladies Euchre Club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Wood. The April meeting of the Newcastle Horticulture Soci- ety was held at the home of Mrs. Vicki Lesnick. A discus- sion was made concerning the foundation planting of a bed at the gates of Bond Head Cemetery. Plans were made for the May meeting at the Community Hall when the Horticulture Society will en- tertain the Senior Citizens on May 22. Mrs. Wes Magill and daugh- ters, Woodstock, were visitors with her mother, Mrs. George Allin recently. Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Fergu- son have returned from a wonderful two-week vacation in Jamaîca. Mrs. Cecil Ferguson recent- ly enjoyed a week's holiday in Toronto. On Thursday, Ma 1, Unit Two of the Unite Church Women met at the home of Mrs. Alec Martin. There were about twenty ladies in atten- dance. The devotional was taken by Mrs. Woods' group, the theme being the Prodigal Son. Following the devotional, the business period was con- ducted. Plans were discussed for the Sunday School Staff supper and other catering. Refreshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Alec Martin and Gregory spent the week- end with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Martin, Manotick, and atten- ded the wedding of their cousin, Mr. Robert McNeil, Ottawa, on Saturday. - Telephone 987-4201 Mr. and Mrs. Peter Slager, Woodstock were Friday night guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Visser. Misses Dale Powell and Cathy Wright spent the week- end at their respective homes. Mrs. Paul Shetler, Wendy and Lynda and Mrs. Roger Duval, Oshawa, visited Sun- day with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell. Mrs. William Starks, Mrs. Brenton Rickard, and Mrs. Lorne Johnson had a birthday party for Mrs. Pinnegar who celebrated her seventy-ninth birthday at Bowmanville Hos- pital on Sunday, May 4. Other patients in hospital are: Harve Britton, Vernon Calberry, Alex Patterson and Vic Wilson. Besides treating the Senior Citizens, Mrs. J. DeJong cele- brated her birthday with her family. Her twelve grand- children and their mothers were treated at Macdonald's and afternoon swimming at the Civic Auditorium. On the Saturday evening, she enter- tained her own children, their wives and husbands at her home. The Village of Newcastle Fireman are kept busy this spring as usual. On April 30 at 7:23 p.m., they were called out along the C.P.R. railroad near William's Grove Orchards. On Friday, May 2, at 8:29 p.m. there was a grass fire behind the Woodland Products Build- ing. Mr. John Hoar, Toronto was home for the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hoar. Miss Heather Hoar, Toronto, was home on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pearce, Vicki and Kirk, Beth- any, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank McMullen, Scarborough were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pearce. Trousseau Tea On Saturday, May 3, Mrs. Murray Paterson held a trousseau tea in honour of her daughter, Mary Grace. Re- ceiving the guests at the door were the bride's mother, the groom's mother, Mrs. Roy Milton, and the bride's grand- mother, Mrs. Howard Toms. The hostesses in the rooms where the gifts and trousseau were ,displayed, were the groom's sister, Miss Cathy Milton, the bride's sister, Miss Ruth Paterson and the bride's cousins, Mrs. Kathy Grant and Misses Jeannette and Susan Wagar. Presiding at the tea table were the bride's aunt, Mary Wallace and the groom's grandmnother, Mrs. Sam Milton. The lunch was served by Jean Wagar, Edna Darling, Mary Garrod, Frances Wrigh t, Evelyn Embley and Kay Powell The Friday Night Mixed Bowling League On Saturday, May 3, the Friday Night Mixed Bowling League finalized their year with a banquet at Rock Haven in Peterborough. The winners of the troph ies were as folMows: The League Trophy by the Hi-Jacks, Brenda and Adrien DeLaat. A door prize, donated by Hooper's Jewel- ers, was won by Ron Munro. After a few remarks by President Albert Pearce and Bowling Lane Manager Merrill Henry, and the Trea- surer's Report by Stanley Powell, the group returned to the home of Myrte and Albert Pearce for an evening of Progressive Euchre. Wînners of the euchre were: High Lady, Nina Madill; High M an, Ron Good; Low Lady, Ga dys Henry; Low Man, tied, Ron St. Pierre and Fred- Couch. Four baskets of apples donated by John Sikma were won by Terri St. Pierre, Janet McCracken, Bill Call and Bob Simpson. One other door prize was won by Eva Couch. The League is very grateful to Myrtle and Albert for opening up their home. A very enjoyable evening was had by all. St. George's Anglican News On Sunday, May 4, Rev. Robert Hayne administered the rite of baptism to two children, Thomas Richard Spencer and Jason Alvin Currah. The morning service was the Blessing of the Seeds for Rogation Sunday. Ascension Day Service will be held this Thursday, May 8, at 9 a.m. with Holy Commun- ion. On Saturday, May 3, the Rectory grounds had their spring cleaning. Scout Report-by Glen Schmid On Monday night, the Scouts invested Cecil Knapp into their troop. They also nvested Hugh Coutts as a leader. Refreshments were served later. This Thursday, May 8, there will be a Parent and Group Committee Meeting at 8:30 at the Anglican Church Hall. Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ellis on the death of his mother, Mrs. Percy Ellis, at Campbellford Memorial Hospital on Friday, May 2. On Sunday afternoon, May 3, four generations were present at the christening of Richard Thomas Spencer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Spencer, Jr., Port Hope. Grandfather Ernest Spencer and great grandfather Thomas Spencer, Sr., were also in attendance. About fourteen enjoyed the lunch with great-g randparents, Alecia and Thomas Spencer, after the baptismal. Mr. and Mrs. Balfour Moore spent Wednesday with the Dave Robinson's at Stroud. On Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. George Bowers attended the auction sale of Mr. and Mrs. Zack Adams in Bowmanville. Dinner guests on Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Williams and family were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Williams, Nestle- ton; Mr. and Mrs. Doug Fallis and family, Bowmanville.
