Hi ayfinso teae Announces $85,00 Grant For Floodplain Mapping Alex Carruthers, M.P.P., Durham, in a press release from Queen's Park announces that approval has been given by the Ontario government through the Minister of' Natural Resources for a provincial grant of $85,000 to the Ganaraska Region Conser- vation Authority for floodplain mapping of watercourses in the Town of Newcastle. The project, which will cost an estimated total of $114,000, includes aerial photography, engineering and mapping along Graham Creek, Foster Creek, Wilmot Creek and their tributaries, as well as one additional stream near New- castle. Approximately 120 miles of watercourse will be mapped. The grant represents 75 per cent of the total cost. Canada Cord Ceremony A most impressive cere- mony was held in Blackstock United Church, Sunday June 1st at 7:30 when Canada Cords were presented to Jean Hor- ton, Betty Jane Taylor, Lois VanCamp and Linda Wheeler. The Canada Cord is the highest award given in the Girl Guide Association and any Guide receiving it is a credit to her community. The processional hymn was Onward Girl Guides Onward, followed by the singing of O Canada. Rev. Victor Parsons received the colours and dedicated the Canadian Flag. At this time he also welcomed the capacity crowd of Com- missioners, Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cubs, Rangers, ,fami- ly, friends and relatives. Our local Ranger group favoured us with several musical numbers accompani- ed by Marie VanCamp. District Commissioner Mrs. Pat Sleep spoke a fev words. She called on four Brownies and four Guides to take their places beside the four Canada Cord recipients. Each Brow- nie and Guide introduced her Canada Cord Guide and gave a resume of her achievements plus other bits of information during her stay in both the Brownie Pack and Guide Company here in Blackstock. Division Commissioner, Mrs. Joan Hawes, presented the red and white Canada Cords to the four honoured Guides. Presentations of gifts followed from Brownies and Guides, the Local Association, the Mothers' Auxiliary and the pa.rents of the Canada Cord Guides. A short ceremony followed when the four Guides all advanced to Rangers. "Let New Forestry Learners Join Hydro Ken Allin John Coatham Ivan Griffin Three new Forestry Learners joined the staff of Hydro's Bowmanville Area recently. All three are bachelors. They are Ken Allin, John Coatham and Ivan Griffin. Ken was born in Bowmanville and attended school there. He spendt much of his spare time skiing. John was born in Bowmanville but lived and attended school in nearby Orono. Before joining Hydro he worked for two years at Owen Brothers, tree experts in Oshawa. His hobbies are hunting, fishing and camping. Ivan was born in Enfield and attended Courtice Secondary School and Sir Sandford Fleming College, where he gained a diploma as Forest Technician. Get well wishes are extend- ed to Alex Joncas who is a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. He is to have eye surgery this week. Alex was taken to Bowmanville Hospi- tal on Saturday in the ambul- ance after suffering paralysis, the result of an old war injury. He recuperated from this and was then transferred to Osh- awa. BLACKSTOCK The Students' Council and many people in the Cartwright community are involved in a research project - namely, trying to locate the addresses of all students who attended the local continuation school and high school in the last fifty years. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the school building, so a reunion is being planned for the weekend of June 21 - 22 and hopefully as many former students as possible will be able to come back to Blackstock on the weekend and reminisce about the "good old days". Invita- tions will be sent out but watch your newspaper for further details. The students of CHS com- peted with Millbrook H.S. students in the annual Bi- School Track and Field Meet at Millbrook last Thursday. Sorry to report that the CHS students did not bring home the trophy for total points, however we did manage to have one individual champion - Wilma Wolters - who obtained five firsts in five events in the Junior Girls' category.
