Vandals-Fina-lly. Finish Burni ng Potter House Friday night at 8:40 what was known as the former Potter bouse on Clinton Avenue burned to the ground. The two storey bouse located on the Goodyear flats bas been vacant for the last few years, and bas been a target for vandals. Youths have entered the building and destroyed the walls, doors and windows over the years. The cause of the fire is believed to have been vandals playing with matches, Fire Chief Jim Hayman says. A number of youngsters were reported to be in the area of the burning bouse. The fire was coming through the roof when firemen arrived. Chief Hayman reports this is the third time this year, that firemen have rushed to a fire a the bouse. The owner of the house is Allan Glower Will- iams, (better known to resi- dents as Jimmy Wiliams) now of 4625, North Oake Dr., Pasadena, California. Nels Osborne, a relative, bas tried over the years to keep the bouse boarded up, however vandals have removed tbe boards eacb time. Chief Hay- man placed a value on the bouse of $1,000. Combined services were held in Canton Church on Sunday to celebrate the fif- tieth anniversary of the Unit- ed Church Union. Nancy Clark, Laurie Nichols, Jim Palmer and Dale Behm play- ed trumpets during the ser- vices. A joint choir from Garden Hill, Welcome, and Canton entertained, also a junior choir from the three charges. Rev. Lawrence Pur- dy, B.A.B.D., Director of Communications and Stew- ardship for Hamilton Confer- ence, was the guest speaker. Shiloh's Anniversary Ser- vice was well attended with guest speaker Rev. N. E. Schamerhorn of St. Paul's, Bowmanville, assisting Rev. Montgomery. Mrs. Brian Cas- well was organist. Rev. and Mrs. Montgomery sang a duet "Bless this Church, O Lord, We Pray". Also Rev. Mont- gomery sang a solo, "Jesus. Lover of My Soul." Shiloh U.C.W. held their June meeting at the home of Miss Norma Hallowell, Bow- manville, with twenty ladies present and Rev. Montgom- ery. The president Mrs. Bert Trim opened the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Jim West- heuser, Belleville, visited his mother Mrs. E. Westheuser. Mrs. Fowlie and Miss W. Muldrew of California, are spending holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Russell Savery. Mr. and Mrs. Ewart Robin- son, Miss Catherine Stewart, Kendal, Mrs. Edna Dobson, Miss Michele Hallowell and Sandra Miller of Bewdley, were guests with Mr. and Mrs. Llew Halliowell. Mr. and Mrs. Sid Hallowell visited with friends in Orillia* Mrs. Bert Trim, MIrs. Jim Stark and Mrs. Dobson, went on the bus trip to Scarborough Shopping Centre. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Caswell and Jeffrey, Miss Norma Hallowell, Miss Beulah Hal- lowell, Bowmanville, were dinner guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Llew Hallowell. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Shier were callers Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Liew Hallowell. in the hall. Many visitors attended. Next Sunday is Garden Hill anniversary with Dr. Bob Sneyed as guest speaker at 9:15 a.m Elizabethville Anniversary at 2:30 p.m. Dr. Pat Belsey and Rev. Bartlett will conduct services. A birthday party was held for Tom Woods on Sunday at his home. It is his 75th birthday on Tuesday. A nigbt last week, a robber' loaded up a car with articles from Mr. and Mrs. Golder's home, north of H. Quantrill's, and weire driving out of their propertytdropped over the edge of the cuvert and was still there when Mrs. Golder came home. He wanted to be pulled out but she managed to get hold of the police before he could get out so he beat it. The police came and with helicop- ter tried to find him but didn't unless they have since. The car proved to be stolen from Toronto. On Tuesday afternoon, the United Churcb held tbeir June meeting at Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Beatty's home. A good crowd attended witb several visitors. Mrs. W. Muldrew and Mrs. H. Fowler, California were with us. The president Mrs. Ken Frew, presided. Mrs. H. White had tbe program andWthe Devotional part of the meeting. The minutes were read by Mrs.-H. Quantrill. Our booklets put out by our Hope pastoral Charge were introduced and we plan to sell them. It is an interesting history of our township's past and present churches with interesting sketchesof the various chur- ches by K. McHolm. Get your copy as a keepsake from the area to celebrate 50 years of Church Union. Plans were made to cater a sale in June. Also plans for our strawberry supper in July. Lunch was served. Our next meeting will be Sept. 9th at the parsonage at Weicome. Mr. and Mrs. Garry Fowler, Toronto, got moved over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Fowler spent a week witb Mr. and Mrs. C. Yarrow at their cottaize. Mr. and Mrs. R. Cornish, Port Perry were withMr. and Mrs. C. Beatty. Mrs. Hender- son also called. Mrs. O. Mercer returned home from California, Satur- day. On Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Ron Mercer held a miscellan- eous shower for Miss Anne Irwin who will marty Bob Mercerin Jre.tbouttwentÿ~ five attended. Contests were held and lunch was served. Many nice gifts were receiv- ed. Miss Diane Beatty was home over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. G. Fowler, Miss Nancy Fowler and Mr. John Sevenhuysan, Toronto, attended a motorcycle contest near Oshawa on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. Muldrew, Mr. and Mrs. D. Whitbred, and Mr. L. Muldrew, Oshawa, spent the weekend at Sunny- side and are painting the house. NEWTONVILLE Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fletcher arrived home last Tuesday, after an enjoyable visit witb Mr. and Mrs. Dave Fletcher and family in Morris, Michi- gan. While there, they visited various other places, includ- ing, Perry, Bell Oak, Fowler- ville and Okemus, and were overnight guests with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clampitt, in De- troit. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Mer- rill, of Warkworth, were supper guests, Wednesday, with his sister, Mrs. Bea Jones. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson, whose 28th Wedding Anniversary was celebrated recently at Ed's Warehouse Restaurant, in Toronto. Another bus trip to a shopping centre in Toronto was sponsored by some of our U.C.W. members, last Thurs- day, and local ladies among the 41 taking it, included Mrs. Iva Farrow, Mrs. A. Milligan and Berneice, Mrs. Vogels, Mrs. Carole Gardner, Mrs. Jean O'Neill, Mrs. P. Willems and Mrs. Inez Boughen. Mrs. Don Fletcher, of Osb- awa, was an overnight guest. with his parents, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Payne are on a holiday trip to the Western provinces. Mrs. Mary Wade was home, over the weekend, from Bar- rie.
