12The Canadian Statesman, BowmanvilIe, Jul-y 23. 1975 Letter To The Ed"Itor General Delivery, Bowmanville, Ont. July 22, 1975 Dear Editor: "Bowmanville Week", seems to have been somnething the people of the district were waiting for with eagerness. The Beer Garden and beau- tiful -nusic, contrary to somne 'doom-sayers' predictIions was an occasion of friendly to- getherness and sold out at 10):30 p. m. Because of the previous week's heat-wave and the cool-ness of a moonlit night, the conditions were perfect in the setting on The Town Hall's parched park grass. Flags blowing in the evening breeze, the sound of Old Country Music, brouglit to Canadian minds who have neyer been abroad the realization of the truth of what 'OId Country' people tell us of the fun and gaiety of beer-drinking condi- tions in other lands.« The quality and diversifici- tion of the crowd was also as described by Europeans. School teachers, politicians, lawyers, people from various industries and ail political persuasions gathered together in friendly groups, singing and enijoying mnusic and beer together, it makes one wonder If this isn't one answer to differences. Smoothing out the differences with amnity in healthful surroundings, rather than gathering together fur- tively in enclosed, dimnly lit places with nothinq but a beery-smell', fetid with smoke and sweat, in deadly silence as an evening wears on, hasn't been the wrong way for Brewer' Retail and the LLBO to do business? Anyhow, "Hats off to who)m- ever dreamed up t he idea of a Beer-garden in the open air for Bowmanville Week! " I do believe it was the Jaycees! Thank you, Jaycees, this may be the start of 'somnething good'! Gratefully, Mary A.
