Section Two The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillp oer1 17 More than 5,000 Present for Waterfowl Day <September 7th the sun smiled warmly upon Darling- ton Provincial Park, the site of the 4th Annual Sportsman's Waterfowl Day. In excess of ..5,000 people enjoyed educa- tonal dîsplays to bullfrog jumping contests - food from the wlds to tournament com- petition in such waterfowlîng activities as dog trials, decoy carving, duck calling, shoot- ing and waterfowl i dentifica- tion. The biggest and best to date, this year's event was a splendid example of coopera- tion' between the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Many hours of planning and work by these parties culminated in a most successful well organ- ized program. The Grand Champion for thîs year's tournament corn- f etition was Earl Newhall rom Orllia while AI Taylor, also, of Orillia, nailed down second place. For the first time this year, the National Duck Calling Championships were held at the Sportsman's Waterfowl Day. AI Taylor of Orillia paced first in this competition followed by Earl Newhall. Children who were in at- tendance and entering the Essay Contest are reminded that their essays must be received hy September 24. Prizes of $50, $30, and $20 for ist, 2nd and 3rd places respectively will be awarded along with trophies for the successful competitors. Ganaraska Fishway L.B. Males, Fish and Wild- life Technician. Once again the Ganaraska fishway in Port Hope bas heen opened to enable the faîl run of rainbow trout to ascent to their spawning grounds. This run is not expected to be as large as the spring run but those fish which do attempt travelling through 'the fish ladder will'be carefully exam- ined. A scale sample, used to determine the age of the fish, length and weight will be taken from each trout and a disc tag affixed near the dorsal fin for later identifica- tion. All fish are also checked forar ol1mnr-v senri n ont wounds and their sex and reproductive state are record- cd. For those persons fortunate enough to catch a tagged trout, we would appreciate you returning the tag to the Lindsay District Office of the Ministry of Natural Re- sources,'322 Kent Street West, K9V 2Z9. You will be provided with the pertinent information available on that fish. The natural populations of rainbow trout in this area are primarily spring spawners but with 'the stocking program being carried out by this Ministry, different strains of rainbow have been introduc- ed, giving the enthusiastic angler enjoyable' an reward- ing fîshing, both sprirg and fall. Cones Wanted RA. Lockhart, District For- est Supervisor. Persons interested in pick- ing cones, from which we extract the seed to enable us to maintain our planting pro- grams, may obtain contracts by p honing the following Hea dquarters. Contracts are being issued, and depending upon the species collected, we are paying from $20.00 to $60.00 per hectoliter (approx- imately 212 bushels). Picked cones wîll not be purchased unless you first have a contract. Ganaraska Forest 416-797-2959 Northumberland Forest 416-349-2779 WESLEY VILLE A trip to an isolated it of woods on Saturday failed to find one sign of wild life except an old beaver cutting but evidently the wild creatures are getting educated to live by someone elses efforts even as some -people do. A farmer had taken every precaution with considerable expense, to protect 4the product of his summer's work but the wily coons found a way to get to it; and the birds are sitting in the apetrees in flocks. They are loeyto see, and interesting to watch until they become too destructive. The first regular quilting of the faîl started last week at Mrs. H. Darkes and it seems as if it will be a busv season.
