10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. October 8. 1975 Shaw's ews Someone seeKïng a peculiar thrill or in search of revenge to the postal system passed through our community last Monday evening causing con- siderable damage to the rural mail boxes. Almost every box in our neighbourhood was damaged to some degree with some residents, having to completely restore post, box and ail. NowI whatever would possess people to do such a thing? The O.P.P. were called and are investigating this incident. Thankfully, a de- scription of the car is avail- able. We notice the new house being built for Mr. and Mrs. David Smith on the Town Line is progressing well. We under- stand they intend to move in later this month. We wish tbem well in this new home. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Guthrie enjoyed a short visit to the east coast recently when they attended bis brother' s ed ding in Moncton N.B. It was a lovely wedding wîth a rather unusuai ceremony which made it even more interest- ing. While in the East, Gail and Bob were fortunate in being invited out to do some deep-sea fishing. It was a rare day when the ocean was calm and clear and Bob's luck was excellent for he had great success with the catch. The Lions Club Olympathon 75 had its route through our community last Saturday. It was a beautiful day for such an event but those in charge were very surp rised at the amount of traffic along Con- cession St. E. Fortunately there was a good Police Patrol which proved very useful. The walkers ranged in age fromn quite young through to Middle age and they seemed to enjoy the fresh country air as they passed the rural scene with corn fields being harvested and apple picking in progress. So far as we know, only two of our local boys participated and both Jim Potter and John David Killeen were successful in completing the walk., They do appreciate the fine number of sponsors firoffi our neigh bourhood who have contribut- ted to this worthy cause. 'Mr. and Mrs. Martin Van Dyk returned this past week fromn a month's holiday in Holland visiting family . ' friends. Tbey report fi'S\l' weather and an excellent trip.' Mayor G. B. Rickard spent Friday and Saturday of this past week attending a meeting of the Board of Directors of the A.MO. - Association of Municipal Organizations-held in Windsor. SA group of Czecho-Slovakian visitors toured farms in our community this week includ- ing that of Reg and Joan Brock and the various enter- prises at Ceresmore Farms. At Reg Brock's, silo-fillîng was in progress. Gordon Barrie and his sons prvdin the action, and at Ceresmore Farms, bean combining was on the go. However this particular group of men found interesting conversation talk- ing in the young orchard with a group of Jugo-Slavian ladies engaged in apple picking. Two of the visitors, Josef $ebek and Vaclav Milik were the competing team fromn their country in the recent World Plowing Match. Their leader, George Donthe described their own particular farmn operation as that of a 6,000 acre state farm. They com- mented that in their country it was difficult to find young people who cared about work- ing seven days a week as some of our farmers do in our private enterprise system.
